Xanthe and Fenella report on windsurfing progress and successes in Sopot, Poland

Hello again! So..! A lot has happened since our last email, we are now in Sopot, Poland - the venue for the Techno 293 World Champs. We arrived here on Thursday after our journey through Italy, with a stop to sail on Lake Garda, then up the Austrian Alps (photo attached), through the Czech Republic and all the way to the top of Poland. Quite the adventure!

So as I was saying, we arrived at our venue on Thursday and got our brand new charter equipment set up and went for a short sail with the rest of the Kiwi team. Friday was Day 1 of the Baltic Sea Cup, our pre-worlds warm up event. As it turned out I didn't race until Saturday because I was put into the Raceboard fleet this gave me the opportunity to make friends with the Norwegian Team and went training with them. This was very beneficial as I had never sailed this new class of board - the Techno 293+, unfortunately I have caught a bad throat cold and so am finding it hard to breath when I exert myself. So on Saturday I only managed 2 races before I returned to the beach.
Our race area is not very far offshore so it is challenging conditions with gusty offshore breezes but by doing this regatta we know what to expect for the Worlds next week.
Sunday I was feeling better and managed to do all of the races although keeping up with the Raceboards was a challenge in its self as their design made them a lot quicker up wind than me. I finished up 2nd woman and 15th overall. (see attached photo of my new trophy!)

Fenella had a great regatta, finishing 5th overall out of 16 girls. She was very happy with this result and she enjoyed the windy conditions.

This week is training with the team. We all have Bruce Kendall over here courtesy of Yachting New Zealand's funding for both this week and for the duration of the worlds.

We are really excited for the worlds and have been having a great time over here learning about the conditions and the culture! So far we can say about 4 words in Polish:
Yes - Tak, No - Nie, Thank you - dziękuję and Good day - dzień dobry

We hope to have another email out by the end of day 1 of worlds, which is next Tuesday.

Thank you all for your interest, encouragement and help to get us this far,

Xanthe and Fenella Bowater.
