Southern Lakes Windriders - February 2018 News

Wow what a good season we’re having ! After lots of hot thermals and Jardines sailing pre Xmas we’re now into the predominant westerlies/NW phase with day after day of good wind, and some fun times at Rat point/Creighton and Glenorchy.. lots more due this weekend.. But hey, I hate to say it, the nights are drawing in L.. so while the water is unusually WARM get out there and have some fun ! Some people have even been out in board shorts and shorties..What ! in Wakatipu ?! Yes the water really is great.

The Club Xmas sail at Glenorchy was a great success with a fun atmosphere on the beach, lots of people trying kiting thanks to Stephano and Ozone, and a good BBQ after. The wind was a little marginal on the Sat but fantastic on the Sunday.

A few club members attended the very successful Aviemore New Years Camp out and in total there were over 20 for the fun racing. Yet again a really SOCIAL event, lots of coffees, pre dinner drinks and parties at rotating people camps… yarns about good holiday spots, equipment, etc …oh and a bit of sailing ! Like about 4/5 hrs a day for some of us J A few also went to the Marahau Camp in mid January (biannual) and had lots of fun with all the area has to offer. As mentioned before these camps are great ways to learn and network as well as having a good social time…. so pencil them in for future years diaries.

Lots of people have been enjoying epic conditions down at the south coast. Do get in touch if you’re interested in wave sailing and would like to join others.

Clearwater Womens Camp. 24/25th Feb.

Coming very soon… Always a fun event on the calendar, with plenty to do when you’re not sailing as you can see from the pic of a few of the club members at the traditional Sat night party. Last year ..Irish theme.. this year “funk’ ! Great winds here it works in most directions, Kiters and Windsurfers. Partners Ok… they just get banished away to Captain Mikes taverna (a caravan orning !) for the girls party time J There’s a big bach booked so up to you if you’d prefer camping or the comfort style. Contact us for more details or if you’re interested in car pooling.

There has been so much interest in this we are delighted to say that Sam Geary from Invercargil will be doing some lessons in Queenstown and down on the South Coast over the next month or so.

Sam only charges $50 /hr which is very reasonable and there is a possibility of discount if you buy gear or for larger groups. He recommends for total beginners doing a 2hr land session on kite handling techniques. Then you should buy/borrow a trainer kite and go away and do approx 10 hours self practice before coming back for the next 3 hrs water session, to get started on the water.

Sam will be in QT and there’s a possibility of doing classes this Sat pm or Sunday (17/18th Feb ) then he’ll be here again the weekend of 3/4th March and possibly in April. He recommends ideally getting groups together to go down south when ready for the water session as generally the conditions are easier for learning.

Contact Sam direct on; 0212650557 or Facebook message him, his is the surfing picture. Have fun.. J

Frankton Wednesdays. 4-8ish View details

Bring your beers and your gear or book the club gear through the Facebook group. Tell your friends about windsurf lessons/rentals available (contact Sue for bookings)… and come down to the beach to sail and be social J (most weeks til end of march but do check with Sue re weather). See Facebook group for which nights BBQs are on.

Access Issues

Jardines; accessed through Jacks Point road now… and the general public & especially locals are starting to use the spot… so we now have to share our once private domain. Mostly its been Ok as most are parking and playing down the bottom end where the Marina earthworks have started and when we want to be there most others are leaving, but there have been a few issues with non sailors driving over kite lines, parking in awkward places for our launching etc. Sue is aiming to do a polite notice for others about the kite launch area. Anyone happy to help with this get in touch J

Glenorchy; The new foreshore landscape work happened and a new path has been installed, at present we can still drive over this to have access to the old spot…We’re trying to ensure it stays that way, rather than the delta being closed off to all cars. Will keep you posted.

CLUB Gear & Bookings.

The club gear is pretty popular now which is great so to ease admin this should now be ‘booked’ by making a post on the club Facebook page ‘Queenstown Windsurf and Kitesurf Club’.
