North Island RS:X and Techno champs 2011, Tauranga 12-13 March - Race Report

Light afternoon sea breezes and strange tsunami tidal effects made for two days of challenging racing at the windsurfing regatta at the weekend.

“We almost didn’t have an event with the civil defence warnings to stay away from the water for most of Saturday’ said event organiser Stuart Pedersen. ‘Our scheduled start time was 1pm and we talked to the local Coastguard twice in the morning before deciding to go ahead. Tsunami effects in the harbour were expected to be insignificant – we were certainly safe but the effects were quite noticeable. Twice we saw the tide reverse in quite a dramatic and unpredictable way, which made it very tricky to sail in – especially with light winds meaning board speeds were not high.”

Youth Winners at Sail Auckland 2011

At an ISAF Grade 1 event like 2011 Sail Auckland Regatta the big name Olympic sailors tend to get the spotlight, when there are plenty of interesting and hard fought battles going on at age-group level across all the fleets. Of the RS:X 8.5 male youth sailors Sven Pedersen came out on top of Enzo Pla in second and Kal Rutter in third. In the female youth equivalent NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team representatives from 2010 Georgia Schofield was the top placed sailor ahead of Naomi Mannering and Isobel Hawkins. When combined the female winner, Georgia Schofield, was the second best placed youth sailor overall in the 8.5.

Rio 2016: It's Time To Bite The Bullet - windsurfing at the Olympics

The deadline for making submissions to the ISAF Mid Year Meeting in St.Petersburg, Russia is 1200hrs UTC on March 10th. The statistics show that there are 2.9 million windsurfers in Germany alone. Extrapolate that world wide and it's easy to come to the conclusion that there are more windsurfers on the planet that any other sort of sailor. The bad news is that there are supposedly serious and responsible people within ISAF who think that windsurfing and kiteboarding should be combined into one event as a biathlon. If this was not so serious, it would be laughable. Both the windsurfing and the kiteboarding communities are strongly against this idea. Small and emerging sailing nations will be quick to understand that this will double the cost of the 'boards' medal and exclude a lot of them because they either don't have a kitesurfer or a windsurfer worthy of a place in the Games.
