An overdue windsurfer became stranded in the cold waters of Lake Rotorua after running out of energy - sparking a rescue operation involving a helicopter and Coastguard. The Rotorua man, who went windsurfing on the lake late yesterday morning, was reported missing by his family when he failed to return home on time.
Detective Sergeant John Wilson told The Daily Post the man was experienced but had not been windsurfing for a few years.
Anyone who has windsurfed Taupo's Wharewaka point will know what a great location this is to sail from. The wind is side shore and fills right into beach, the water is wast deep just of the beach and you can park and rig on grass right next to the beach.
Some Sailors will remenber sailing racing from here too. We have had upto 200 sailors racing.
