Barbara Kendall is the best of the kiwis in 8th, with Kate Ellingham in 18th and Steffanie Williams at 42nd. There are no kiwi men competing.

In order to help newcomers to sailboat racing, ISAF have produced a one page set of Introductory Rules for Racing complete with some explanatory diagrams. The aim of the Introductory Rules for Racing is simple; make as it easy as possible for people to start racing. Consequently the Introductory Rules are as basic as possible, although they remain compatible with the principles and fundamental rules in the full ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).
Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland concluded today with the international sailors coming home with gold in the hotly contested Women’s Laser Radial, Tornado, Women’s and Men’s RS:X classes.

In the women’s RS:X class Marina Alabau of Spain continues to lead with Romy Kinzl of Germany moving up into 2nd place. Local girl and recent silver medalist at the World Championships Barbara Kendall is lying 3rd at the end of day two just one point behind Kinzl. Over in the Men’s RS:X points are tight amongst the top three with Greek windsurfer Nikos Kaklamanakis and Joao Rodrigues of Portugal on equal points at the top of the table. Overnight leader Jon-Paul Tobin is just one point adrift of the leaders lying 3rd.
A mix of top international names and local talent came out on top of the six Olympic classes which began racing in the on Auckland Harbour today.
Sailors and organisers are counting down to Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland 2008 with racing set to start this weekend on Saturday 16th February off Kohimarama Yacht Club. The ISAF grade one event which runs over four days will this year boast world class fleets in the Tornado and women’s Laser Radial with many internationals currently in New Zealand preparing for their respective World Championships. RS:X windsurfers, Lasers, 470s, 420s and 2.4 metres will also compete in Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland.
Yachting New Zealand’s Olympic Squad members Jo Aleh and Tom Ashley took time out from their busy schedules to give attendees of the New Zealand Laser Association’s Annual Laser Nationals Dinner an insight into their lives on the campaign trial to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Tom Ashley from New Zealand has secured the 2008 RS:X Men’s World Championship in the medal race sailed in blustery conditions off Takapuna beach. Alessandra Sensini has taken out the women’s title with a win in the medal race today.
South easterly winds gusting to 25 knots were seen for the first time during this event and the medal races took place close to shore with a crowd of spectators on the beach and nearby ramp.
