Windsurfing NZ Affiliated Windsurfing Schools standards checklist

Windsurfing schools complying with WNZ Affiliation requirements are expected to meet the following standards::

WNZ/RYA Qualified Instructor(s) - 1 for every 6 students max.
Each instructor carries beltbag containing:

  • triangular bandage,
  • 6m tow-rope,
  • pocket knife,
  • dayglow flag,
  • whistle


  • Safe/suitable sailing area - clearly defined
  • Suitable rigging area - big enough to lay out all rigs in use, clear of public paths/roads, preferably grass


  • Beginners boards in reasonable condition - must have:
    • Sufficient buoyancy - 2 1/2 weight of student on basic course
    • Fully functional basic fittings - retractable centerboard, lockable mast-tracks or fixed deck fittings with secure rig attachments, towing eyes
    • Good non-slip surface from 1/2 metre before mast to 1/2 metre after centre-case
    • Sufficient spare parts - a complete spare board is OK.
  • Beginners rigs in reasonable condition - must be:
    • No heavier (complete) than 1/6 of students weight
    • In a range of sail sizes to suit all student capabilities
    • Proper uphauls and ropes in good order
    • Large, clear sail windows

Student equipment:

  • Buoyancy aids/ lifejackets - enough for maximum number of students
  • Wetsuits - A sufficient selection so that no student is expected to go afloat without enough insulation to feel comfortable in the water or in the wind while wet. (Check maximum chill factors.) If wetsuit is doubling as personal buoyancy, shoulder coverage is essential.
  • Helmets - available for students if they wish

Other items:

  • First-aid kit - on hand at site and kept updated, to suit the operation, please check with St Johns.
  • Sunblock - all students should be reminded and encouraged to use this
  • Telephone for emergency use - mobile should be kept close to hand on site with all emergency numbers with phone.
  • Registration forms - the following information must be recorded for every student:
  • Name, address and phone number,
  • Next of kin or contact person, Age group (under/over 18)
  • Type of course being taken.
  • Health declaration - includes water confidence, fitness,
  • Hand-out notes for students - (optional but advised)
  • Drawing board (optional) - black or white.
  • Simulator - A platform with rig attachment that can be rotated = minimum requirement.
    - No more than .35 m from ground, and controlled in rotation (or tilt if applicable).

Safety boat - required if students are allowed more than 100 metres from the shore, excluding any island. Boat must have capacity for half max. students afloat in roughest conditions used.
(an exemption may be granted if local conditions are unsuitable for motorboats and alternative safety craft/s are used)

  • A reliable motor with a positive cut-out switch.
  • Flares and smoke flares
  • Paddles tied in
  • Tow rope
  • Bailer attached by a line to the boat
  • Spare tow-ropes
  • Fire extinguisher suitable for petrol fires (open boats exempted)
  • Buoyancy aids for each occupant (not already wearing one).
  • Reserve fuel in safe store at all times
  • Anchor with a good length of rope, secured to the boat
  • (We have been granted an exemption! - certified school declarations only)

Have contacted the the local authority and Harbourmaster and comply with all local requirements regarding permits.

Follow Best Practise Standards and to have a Risk Assessment Analysis and Accident Register.

Note: If a school claims to be Windsurfing NZ Affiliated and Compliant but does not meet these standards please contact us immediately.
