Auckland to Russell - Not this year.

The forcast was less than we were hoping for a record breaking run from Auckland to Russell. We all geared up at the Tamaki Yacht Club pulling out our biggest sails. My support boat from Line7 arrived and we loaded all the gear needed. Food, water, smaller sails a few beers for the support crew.Luke Wiggelsworth departed at 8.30 am hoping to get out of the harbour in what was left of the South Easterly. I left at 9.30 and had caught Luke by Rangitoto lighthouse by cutting inshore out of the current and running out of wind as well. The wind was dying all the time and after 2 hours we were still trying to get out of the harbour. A light sea breeze arrived as we headed north. 5 hours later things were not looking good , we had only made it as far as Gulf Harbour. Reluctantly we pulled the pin, it was not going to happen this year.Frustrated with the weather we headed back to Auckland. Gutted was my initial feeling , the work that we had done preparing gear , boat and supportcrew. We knew from the start we were very weather dependant and any thing from the north would be a no go, we persisted but it was not our day.We will give it another go next year, but hope to have a one off attempt at the record soon. So the waiting begins for suitable day. Thanks for all your encouragement.Aaron.
