YNZ National Youth Squad - Update

The first of three National Youth Squad Clinics was conducted recently at the Takapuna Boating Club. Attendees travelled from Northland, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay to receive top level coaching from Yachting New Zealand Youth Coaches.

Coaches included Olympians Bruce Kendall, Dan Slater and Jamie Hunt as well as top performers in a number of other Olympic and Youth Classes.

“The 420 group improved immensely over the weekend. I think Jamie & Scott (Illingworth) did a great job at lifting this group,” Marty Watson said. “The performance improvement was certainly noticeable. Likewise with the Laser Radial Group under Dan and Sara’s (Winther) guidance”.
Two time Olympic Medallist Bruce Kendall and Polish Youth Worlds Gold Medallist Natalia Kosinska worked closely with a group of youth aged RS:X sailors including two new comers to the class, Alice Hawkins, and Georgia Schofield.

“The new girls really impressed me with their determination. At times the conditions tested them both but they certainly rose to the challenge over the course of the weekend” Bruce Kendall said.

Attendees also received advice from New Zealand Academy of Sports’ new Aussie import, nutritionist Daniel Heally. Daniel provided information on new thinking on preparation and recovery, specifically for the respective sailing events of the youth group.

The next National Youth Squad Clinics will be held at the Wakatere Boating Club on the 4 and 5 of April. For more information on Yachting New Zealand’s National Youth Squad visit the YNZ Website or contact Marty Watson,
