Race Management: Seminars and Training


The Race Management Seminars are approaching very soon. The courses are suitable for beginners who want to know more, those with some experience on the start boat or mark boat, those who have some experience as a race officer, those who wish to seek qualification as a Club Race Officer or National Race Officer and those very experienced wishing to revalidate. It is expected that experienced members will assist sharing their knowledge during the seminars.

Auckland (YNZ Upstairs) June 7 & 8 - Application deadline: May 28
Dunedin (Port Chalmers) June 21 & 22 - Application deadline: June 11
Bay of Plenty (Lake Taupo Yacht Club) July 12 & 13 - Application deadline: July 2
Wellington (Sport Wellington) July 26 & 27 - Application deadline: July 17


The venue for the July 5 & 6 Judging Seminar in Wellington has been confirmed as the Heretaunga Boating Club. Please have your registrations to Yachting New Zealand by June 27 if you would like to attend.

Stay tuned as a handful more Judging Seminars will be scheduled throughout the country over the winter. Judging Seminars include an introduction to the Rules with special emphasis on the rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet). Additionally, judging processes including hearings, arbitration, decision making, ”On Water" judging (Rule 42 and Appendix P) and rules administration at events are covered. An introduction to resources such as the ISAF Judges Manual and Casebook is provided.

Coaches: Recognition of Prior Learning

Yachting New Zealand’s new Coaching Framework includes a system which recognizes prior learning (RPL). Through this process we may recognise your prior learning and experience in coaching.

Initially we can only recognise in the Regatta Race Coach and Performance Coach Qualifications however from September we will also be able to apply RPL to the Race Coach qualification.

Reminder to Coaches, Instructors & Race Officers

The majority of YNZ qualifications expire on June 30th, four years after they were first obtained. It is time to double check your qualification and start thinking about what you need to do in order to keep your certificate current. RNZYS seeks Sailing Manager

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) seeks to appoint a Sailing Manager who will be responsible for proactively managing the day to day operations of our busy sailing office making sure that all sailing and boating activities are meeting agreed objectives. This will include ensuring that yacht racing programmes, notices of race, sailing instructions and event management requirements are prepared, scheduled and delivered in a timely and professional manner.

This permanent, full-time position can be demanding and requires a reliable, hands-on, self-motivated individual who is flexible and able to work evenings and weekends. A current ‘full’ driver’s licence is necessary.
