YNZ News extracts - Ashley speaks to Laser sailors, Cozzolino takes Formula title

Yachting New Zealand’s Olympic Squad members Jo Aleh and Tom Ashley took time out from their busy schedules to give attendees of the New Zealand Laser Association’s Annual Laser Nationals Dinner an insight into their lives on the campaign trial to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Aleh, who has accumulated a handful of Grade 1 event medals in the past 12 months, and Ashley, having recently won the RSX Worlds, had plenty to offer the 140 attendees of the dinner. The pair imparted some inspirational views on their approach to competing at the highest level in Olympic Classes. They also shared some valuable technical tips with around 40 youth aged sailors who were competitors in the combined 2008 New Zealand Laser, Laser Radial, Laser Masters and Laser 4.7 National Championships last week.

Cozzolino takes Formula title in Australia

Antonio Cozzolino has taken the 2008 Lightweight Oceanic Championship at the 2008 Oceanic and Australian Formula Windsurfing Championships sailed recently at Suttons Beach, Redcliffe in Queensland.

The New Zealand RS:X sailor who put in a strong performance considering he used a smaller and lower spec sail than the rest of the fleet (9.5m RS:X sail) and managed to hold onto his 7th position overall, consistently flirting with the leaders. “It was definitely challenging racing the top guys with an RS:X sail especially seeing that this has been my first experience with Formula. I had a lot of fun though and really enjoyed the racing and the event was run extremely well.”
