Windsurfers Barbara Kendall and Tom Ashley receive merit awards

The Award of Merit recognises outstanding examples of sailing ability, of seamanship or sportsmanship. The achievements and services of those people who receive the Merit Award has promoted, advanced or bettered our sport in New Zealand.

Tom Ashley has had an outstanding year in men’s board-sailing topped off in August with a gold medal at the Pre-Olympic Regatta in Qingdao, China. In the medal race at the Pre-Olympics after a tight battle with local Chinese sailor, Zhou Tom came out on top. This year Tom Ashley has also won Semaine Olympique Francaise in France, Princess Sofia in Spain and the RS:X South American Championships. Tom is nominated by Takapuna Boating Club and the RS:X Class Association.

Barbara Kendall sailed into her third decade of windsurfing success with another podium finish – this time silver at the ISAF Sailing World Championships, Cascais, Portugal. This latest World Championship medal and a win at the Grade One Princess Sofia regatta are the latest additions to four world titles, three Olympic medals and numerous other podium finishes. Yesterday NZOC confirmed Barbara’s selection for her fifth Olympic Games and she was recently inducted into the ISAF Sailing Hall of Fame. Barbara Kendall is nominated by the RS:X Association.
