RS:X windsurfing. J P Tobins report for July 2007

It has been a roller coaster ride over the past few months, initially finishing 8th at the 2007 European Championships in June which satisfied the qualifying standard for entry into the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad (OS) this result was followed by a testing performance at the 2007 World Championships.

Wind conditions for the 2007 World Championships were extremely shifty with no real pattern in either strength or direction, consequently there were some unusual outcomes with competitors going from leading groups to chasing groups and vice versa in seconds. During the qualifying races I was performing consistently in the top 5 in each of the 5 qualification races taking 7th position overall into the finals. However the final series of races provided some interesting challenges with equipment issues, radical conditions and a somewhat off performance contributing to a disappointing result of 21st overall.

There was some consolation from the Championships with compatriots Barbara Kendall (RS: X) and Andrew Murdoch (Laser) both proving luck beats skill :) winning Silver medals in their respective disciplines.

I am now back in New Zealand to take a few days to relax from training and get some other projects advanced prior to starting preparation for the 2008 competitive season in August confident of what I need to resolve to shift performance to the level required for me to step on the podium for both the World Championships (New Zealand) in January 2008 and ultimately the podium at the Olympic Games (China) in August 2008.

The World Championships in Takapuna, New Zealand will be a leading focus for both national main stream and international sailing media, this focus will provide excellent promotional opportunities for sponsors.

Subsequently I am seeking partners to take advantage of this unique opportunity.
