ISAF Worlds conclude – NZ earns 8 Olympic places including RS:X Windsurfing womens and mens

New Zealand has qualified to send a representative to the 2008 Olympic Games in the Women’s 470. Melinda Henshaw and Olivia Powrie earned the 470 spot for the country by finishing in 15th place, and just within the top thirteen nations in their class at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Cascais, Portugal.

It’s an impressive result for the pair who is sailing in their first major regatta together. The next key event for them will be the Women’s 470 World Championships 2008 to be sailed in January in Australia, where New Zealand’s Olympic selectors will be watching their performance.

The ISAF Sailing World Championships have now concluded. New Zealand has come away from this regatta which is the principle qualification event for the 2008 Olympics in Qingdao, with two medals, and a place in eight out of eleven of the Olympic classes for next year. Amongst the teams results there were five in the top ten and a further three in the top 15.

Highlights have been a silver medal for Andrew Murdoch in the Laser class, and another world championship medal for Barbara Kendall in the Women’s RS:X, who also picked up silver. Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams finished just outside the medals in 4th place in Star, while the kiwi Yngling crew led by Sharon Ferris achieved a season best to finish 6th.

Murdoch and Kendall are part of a small New Zealand team which will test the waters off Qingdao, China one month from now at the Pre-Olympic test event. New Zealand will be sailing in seven of the Olympic classes in Qingdao this year, with a team of just nine sailors. Conditions in China are expected to be light in contrast to the blustery winds which Cascais produced.

Places are now confirmed in the following classes…

Laser Radial
Women’s RS:X
Mens’s RS:X
Women’s 470
