Pressure mounts to remove swing moorings in Shoal Bay

Shoal Bay in Bayswater is a popular spot for kite surfers and windsurfers in south-westerly and westerly winds. It is described as the North Shore's most consistent and safe location, especially in outgoing tides, on a New Zealand internet forum for the sport.

The problem seems to be that Mr Barton's boat mooring, and several others in Shoal Bay, are considered a hazard for surfers who like to use a naturally forming speed bar, which forms behind the sandbank when the tide is right.

Phil Stoddart, who has been windsurfing for 28 years and is a partner in sports equipment store Windsurfing South Pacific on Barry's Point Rd, Takapuna, says he doesn't condone threats of vandalism or want to appear heavy-handed, but if there ever was a case of the greater good, this is it.
