Barbara Kendall and Tom Ashley win Gold in Spain

Barbara Kendall and Tom Ashley won the Neil Pryde RS:X Woman's and Men's windsurfing classes; Andrew Murdoch came second in the Laser Class; and Jo Aleh and Hamish Pepper took thirds in the Laser Radial and Star classes. New Zealand has scored an outstanding result at the 2007 HRH Princess Sofia Regatta in Spain. The Regatta is one of the best known Olympic regattas and is one of the six events in the International Sailing Federation?s World Cup series. In addition Barbara Kendall, who has three Olympic medals and three world titles in the previous Olympic class Mistral, was the absolute winner of the Princess Sofia Regatta. Jean Paul Tobin came sixth in the Neil Pryde RS:X Men's and Dan Slater finished ninth in the Finn class. The last day of racing saw excellent 12 to 14 knot winds for the medal race. This race was only open to the top ten sailors of each Olympic class, scored double points and cannot be discarded. Tom Ashley?s win in the Neil Pryde RS:X Men's class continues his run of top results, having won every event he's competed in this year. 'I?m stoked to win the Regatta. The conditions have at times been difficult with shifts and gusts, but I've been pleased with my speed in the light winds. In the medal race I had a great first lap and while I was overtaken by my training partner, I held onto second to take the outright lead,' said Tom. All six members of the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad competing in the regatta placed in the top ten of their classes. Meanwhile New Zealand sailors Rohan Lord and crew Miles Addy are also scoring success in the Star Class. Competing in the 2007 Western Hemisphere Championship regatta in Florida, they finished fourth after six races, behind such well know sailors as Iain Murray.
