The Official Olympic Class as raced on by Barbara Kendall, and Aaron McIntosh. During this time I won various youth titles, Oceanic, National, Secondary School and New Zealand Youth Yachting Selection.I raced in my first Mens World Championships when I was 16 years of age, having qualified at the Cork Regatta in Kingston Canada. I have been to 3 Youth Worlds. Having finished school in 2000, I did a European campaign in 2001, Racing in Kiel Regatta Week and the Mistral European Championships. Also my major reason for travelling to Europe the World Champs (Athens, Greece), where I finished 26th from 116 competitors with 4 top ten places, thus finishing as 3rd Youth. I have competed in 7 countries in pursuit of my sport, and trained and travelled in manymore.Current Status:In the Year of 2002 the two major events are the Pre-Olympics, the dress rehearsal for the Olympics themselves. These are held at the Olympic Site in Athens Greece. Also of course the World Championships, to be held in Thailand, during November. Both require qualification - which I have gained. My plans for 2002 include travelling to Kiel Week in early June, before training extensively with Jon Paul Tobin in Marseille and Athens before the Pre-Olympics. Followed by competitions in Austria forthe Europeans, and the Worlds Thailand.Recent Achievemt:To gain Qualification for the Olympic Games you must be the best in the qualified country, as only one person may travel to the games. The pre Olympics allow 2, as a way to cover for changes in Performance over the following years.Jon Paul Tobin is currently NZs top ranked sailor and is ranked 5th overall in the world, he is aged 25.Over the Easter Weekend we held the Pre Olympic Trials, the sole event to gain selection.I was fortunate enough to win this event, with only two places out of the top three. My places being. 1, 3, 3, 1, 2, 1, 1, 8, 5, 2, 2, winning the event by four points over Jon Paul Tobin. This was a great achievement on the road to achieving my long term Goal of Olympic Selection for Athens Greece.Kindest RegardsJames WellsNZL141
