Breezy Start to the Long Weekend

On Friday a westerly gale is likely to blast through Manawatu Gorge and may well affect southern Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa. MetService meteorologists are also forecasting
winds from the westerly quarter gusting to about 100kph to batter Fiordland, Southland, South Otago and possibly Dunedin until early Sunday. "These winds are due to the combination of an unyielding high pressure system in the north Tasman Sea and a series of deep lows in the Southern Ocean," commented MetService Weather
Ambassador, Bob McDavitt.

McDavitt is also expecting a generally dry weekend for the main centres. Although wet conditions are likely about the Southern
Alps, only about 20 to 30mm of rain is expected to fall over the catchment areas for the hydro lakes.

If you are taking a caravan or trailer through Manawatu Gorge or across the Rimutakas on Friday, or you plan to go tramping into the Southern Alps this weekend then please take care and keep abreast with the latest weather information.
