10 Drown in July

A total of ten people drowned in July 2002 according to statistics released today by Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ).This takes the year to date figure to 72.

WSNZ executive director Alan Muir said New Zealand is heading for an annual drowning toll of 130, the average for the past 5 years.

“This means New Zealand continues to have a drowning rate that is twice that of Australia per head of population and one of the worst in the Western World,” said Mr Muir.
