Youth Winners at Sail Auckland 2011

At an ISAF Grade 1 event like 2011 Sail Auckland Regatta the big name Olympic sailors tend to get the spotlight, when there are plenty of interesting and hard fought battles going on at age-group level across all the fleets. Of the RS:X 8.5 male youth sailors Sven Pedersen came out on top of Enzo Pla in second and Kal Rutter in third. In the female youth equivalent NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team representatives from 2010 Georgia Schofield was the top placed sailor ahead of Naomi Mannering and Isobel Hawkins. When combined the female winner, Georgia Schofield, was the second best placed youth sailor overall in the 8.5.

The Laser Radial fleet was the largest at the event and included top female Olympic campaigners and Masters sailors as well as the youth competitors. Michael Cate started the regatta strongly, opening up a lead, but as the four day event unfolded Sara Winter, from the NZL Sailing Team overtook. Cate finished up second overall and the top youth competitor ahead of Nicholas Croft, Sam McKenzie and Sam Schofield.

Of the female youth on the Radial course Molly Meech came home ahead of Elise Beavis and Teau McKenzie in the standings.

Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders were the Under 22 winners in the 470 fleet ahead of Frankie Lardies and Finn Drummond.

In both the 420 and the 29er all sailors are of youth age. Alex Munro and Brad Moss won the 420 event from
Sam Mackay and Oscar Rovick with Verity Judge and Gemma Jones third, and also top girls crew.

Jack Simpson and Logan Beck won the 29er skiffs ahead of Matthew Spray and Tyler Russell with Stewart Dodson and Harry Hull rounding out the podium.
