Windsurfing Schools - Adventure Activities Regulations 2011 update

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment: We're seeking further information because you've notified that you're an operator of an adventure activity - surfing, wind surfing or kite surfing - but you may not need to register with the Ministry. (read more)

Background
The regulations define an adventure activity as having various elements, including deliberately exposing participants to the sea or lakes in which the participant is 100 metres from the shore without a boat that can provide rescues. This means that some surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing companies won't need to obtain a safety audit and register.
Surfing and Wind surfing operators
However, the Ministry will still require surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing operators to register if they provide:

* experiences which are more than 100 metres from the shore without a boat to provide rescues, or

* another activity covered by the regulations.
The Ministry recommends all operators to undergo an external review of their safety management system, irrespective of whether they're in scope of the regulations. Please refer to the SupportAdventure website for information on safety management systems.
Of course, it can be difficult to fit your activity into a box like this, but we have to go through the exercise best we can. I'm happy to discuss your particular situation with you if you wish.

PS Some operators have more than one ID, which means they may receive more than one email. An operator requires one ID only, irrespective of how many activities must be registered, so we'll eliminate these duplicates when the public register is available in late February.
