A chilly dip in the Wellington Harbour is the best way to celebrate the cooler months. The forecast is for sunshine on Saturday but the event is on rain, hail or shine! Join the hundreds of others, dress up for the cause, and head down to the Petone Foreshore outside the Heretaunga Boat Club for the annual mid-winter swim.

In most places and on most days, our region's beaches and rivers were fine for swimming last summer, Greater Wellington's recreational water quality monitoring report for 2010/11 On the Beaches shows.

However, two coastal sites in Porirua exceeded the national recreational water quality guideline repeatedly, and in most cases rainfall was not a contributing factor. "Most sites only exceed guidelines after heavy rain as it washes contaminants from agricultural and urban areas into our waterways," says Greater Wellington Senior Environmental Scientist Summer Warr.

The harbour blast is cancelled. It doesn't look like the wind is going to cooperate today. But a few of the guys are going to Eastbourne for a freesailing session at 1-2 o'clock in case the Southerly does arrive.

... On coming 'round the corner we were greeted by a very clean barrelling right hander on a reef just off the local Golf course. It was barrelling top to bottom for a couple of hundred metres off the fourth tee. The first things that popped into my head were "holy crap" quickly followed by "is it sailable?"...
