Techno 293 - the way into windsurfing for kids

In May 2007, the Techno became an ISAF International Class for young sailors. Since then it has experienced rapid expansion worldwide with new countries and sailing federations - including Yachting Australia - choosing the Techno 293 OD to assist in the development of their youth windsurfing and sailing programs.

The Techno 293 Class is devoted to fostering the development of windsurf racing for competitors under the age of 17 years old around the world through the promotion of an inexpensive racing format.

The T293 Class underpins the International Windsurfing Association (IWA) Racing Structure - supporting the senior and youth programmes of both the International Formula and International Raceboard classes.

Similarly the T293 Class forms part of the "Olympic Pathway", recognised by ISAF as the feeder class to RS:X at Olympic and Youth level.

The International Funboard Class (IFCA) supported the establishment of this "junior" class to support its development programme for slalom and speed disciplines.

2008 Olympic Gold medallist Tom Ashley (pictured left) convincingly won the 2010 New Zealand Men’s RS:X National Championships at Manly Sailing Club. This secures the double for Ashley who also won the Men’s RS:X at Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland.

Olliver GunmanThursday 4th December brought together some of NZ best sailors to promote windsurfing as a sport and to officially launch the six new Techno boards destined for Tauranga. They are courtesy of the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy and funded by TECT. At $5800 apiece fully kitted out, the boards aren't cheap but spokesman Stuart Pedersen is adamant they'll be a great investment for the sport's future. "Getting these boards is huge - they'll provide a pathway from learning to windsurf through to getting into serious racing without having to commit to buying your own gear," Pedersen said.

Techno/RS:X North Island Champs

The first ever North Island Champs for Techno and RS:X boards. The Techno is the international youth racing class for under-15s and under-17s. The RS:X is the Olympic class board on which Tom Ashley won gold for New Zealand in China last year, and the country’s top sailors, including Tom and the national champion, Whakatane-born JP Tobin are expected to be racing.

Wind week + Techno launch

A series of windsurfing-related events is scheduled for the week-and-a-bit from Thursday 3 December to Sunday 13 December, to announce the arrival of competitive youth windsurfing in Tauranga.

The events, collectively dubbed ‘Wind Week’ follow the purchase of six new Bic Techno racing boards by the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy, a charitable trust which has been active in developing dinghy sailing in Tauranga since 2004. The boards, generously funded by TECT, are intended to form the core of a regular youth racing fleet alongside the sailing dinghies at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club. To this end, the Sailing Academy has been promoting a ‘Learn to Windsurf’ course at Kulim Park and 11 budding sailors aged 13 to 16 are about to graduate. Another after school course will be run in term one of next year.

Legends become namesakes in windsurf launch

At 4pm on Thursday 3 December, at Takapuna Boating Club in Auckland there will be an event for the launch of the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy Trust’s (BOPSAT) six new Techno boards, which will support a new windsurfing development programme in Tauranga.
