Techno 293 - the way into windsurfing for kids

In May 2007, the Techno became an ISAF International Class for young sailors. Since then it has experienced rapid expansion worldwide with new countries and sailing federations - including Yachting Australia - choosing the Techno 293 OD to assist in the development of their youth windsurfing and sailing programs.

The Techno 293 Class is devoted to fostering the development of windsurf racing for competitors under the age of 17 years old around the world through the promotion of an inexpensive racing format.

The T293 Class underpins the International Windsurfing Association (IWA) Racing Structure - supporting the senior and youth programmes of both the International Formula and International Raceboard classes.

Similarly the T293 Class forms part of the "Olympic Pathway", recognised by ISAF as the feeder class to RS:X at Olympic and Youth level.

The International Funboard Class (IFCA) supported the establishment of this "junior" class to support its development programme for slalom and speed disciplines.

Murrays Sailing Club will be starting a learn to windsurf group in conjunction with Madloop windsurf school. This will be open to sailors from 8 to 15 years.
The group will start out with lessons at the Madloop wind surf school from the 30th October and then the group will continue on at Murrays Bay after Christmas. The aim is to get more sailors racing the Techno 293 Board.

If you already know how to windsurf but now want to learn to race we will also form a green fleet group that you can join to gain windsurfing experience and learn to race.

Event details Kendall Cup 2011-2012

11/09/2011

2010-2011 was the first season of the Kendall Cup series for NZ Techno sailors. We indicated that we hoped to learn from the first season and make improvements where possible. We received some helpful feedback about the running of some of the events, and the difficulty of new sailors being pushed up into the next age division for the spring regattas.

Last month a group of 7 New Zealand junior windsurfers travelled to San Francisco to compete in the Techno293 World Championships along with Kate Ellingham as coach. Their skill level ranged from current and former National Champions to relative beginners on the Techno but all of the sailors had a common aim of learning from the large fleet racing.
