Southern Lakes Windriders news November 2015

SOUTHERN LAKES WIND RIDERS NEWS. Nov. 2015.
Wow what an amazingly windy start to the season ! A group of us have been windsurfing at Rat Point many days a week and I hear some kiters have been going to Crighton, there’s certainly lots of wind around and with El Nino forecast for the summer it looks like a good season is in store.

Glenorchy Fun Weekend coming soon. 5/6th Dec.
Come to Glenorchy for a fun weekend of sailing together. Nothing special structured but we’ll have the BBQ,club trainer kite, windsurf gear and SUP there too. Bring your own other toys so you can enjoy this lovely area whatever. The Glenorchy Hotel are once again doing special room & backpacker rates or there’s camping nearby. (Backpacker beds are 25.00 each Hotel ensuite rooms are 95.00 and hotel non facility rooms are 80.00.) We’ll be planning on getting very social on the Sat night and there may be a band. Bring you dancing mojo !
This event is weather dependent so do check a few days before. Sue 0276408596, slwindriders@gmail.comor check the Club Facebook page for updates;
‘Queenstown Windsurf and Kitesurf Club’.

Open Day
Hugely successful again. We introduced 15/20 new windsurfers to the sport and a few others got going again after many years absence. Hopefully we’ll get a few new club members out of it. Quite a few people turned up to talk about how to get involved in kiting in this area… and a few club members came along for a saussie and to be social.. its such a nice place down there at the beach late afternoon, do come along to the next session. Regular sessions start here every Wed 4-8pm with Sue from Jan-March. Thanks to all the helpers, especially new member Lee who did the whole thing from prep to pack up with Sue.

Follow Up.
Lee is going to organize a follow up session soon to help these newbies to learn to rig our club gear and help them with another session so hopefully they’ll be able to hit the water alone. Might make it a Club Xmas do too !

Rat Point Road Working Bee.
Early season we held a working bee, same old faces ,thanks to Christine, Marc, Aki and Sue.. we’ve now got nearly a highway down tto the beach not an overgrown track ! Just as well we tidied up the car parking area too as we’ve been very busy some days J

New Secretary.
Sad news, we’re losing Dean, who is going off to play in some deep, deep powder in Hokkaido, Japan for a few years ! We wish him all the very best.
… but good news. A mad enthusiastic windsurfer Lee Mansfield is going to take over for us. Good on you Lee I hope you have lots of fun with your new role and meeting lots of good people crazy about playing in the water ! Contact Lee via the club email or Facebook page with info or ideas for the club.

Need kiters contact/trainer……
We’ve already had lots of enquiries from people wanting help to get into kiting. Jim Garner one of our local instructors has said he’s too busy at work, is there anyone else out there who’d be interested in doing lessons or at least being a peer support and helping encourage a group to get going ?

New Anemometer at Glenorchy.
With these westerlies due the whole season it’s great to have an anemometer back in place at Glenorchy, when the old one died it was sorely missed. No-one wants to waste that trip on a marginal day and it helps to show what’s going on for further down the lake as well. Rat Point and Crighton. The club funded this as a resource for all, but it was expensive & has depleted all savings, so we’ve had to put club fees up after many years of staying the same we do hope you support us in joining up again. You’ll get the contact for this when you rejoin, but as its positioned inland just so you know I’ve been monitoring it and I’d say it probably under-reads by about 5 knots.

Club Membership.
Due now. See form attached. Please support your local club J

Jardines Access.
Be very careful if driving to Jardines. Keep to the right and go round the last field (not diagonally as we used to)….. And make sure you join up again this year and get your car sticker !

Don’t forget, the club has a Facebook page to improve networking in the area, people use this regularly for wind updates, posting photos and news, notifying people about events, selling gear locally… check it out !!!! Search; Queenstown Windsurf and Kitesurf Club ‘like it’ and start adding stuff.

Text Wind Alerts. (November was wind alerts holiday time !)
If you'd like to get regular reports on where others are sailing ask Tim to join the text wind alert list. 021509812. Otherwise if you just want to go occasionally, text Tim to find out what’s happening that day. Networking and having company is really important in our cold waters … so do make sure you let us know when the wind is on and where you’re heading…. Actually recently Tim has been away in the Uk so in the meantime Sue has been doing an informal text alert, text me if you want to know whats happening otherwise Tim will be back 6th Dec and we hope will start back up again. .

For any other info contact the club email, slwindriders@gmail.com or ring Sue 027 640 8596 or Lee 0223891621.
