Southern Lakes Wind Riders Club Xmas News

Hi all,
Xmas and New Year Holidays; Lake Aviemore Holiday Camping and Summer Bash, Fun Races 1-3 Jan.

Lake Aviemore has traditionally been a great sailing and camping spot over the holidays. It works in thermal conditions and drags anything from a NE to a S, along the valley and straight down the lake. Windsurfers and kiters camp usually on the northern side..At the “Waitangi” camp area near the “Boat ramp” signs, Dunedin and Southern Lakes sailors are usually a little west of the boat ramp area, drive off the road head back west, look for the 5kms sign and then head for the water.. you should see boards around and about. Some of us will be there all over Xmas and New Year, for those just wanting to go for a few days.. here’s some more details of the fun event. If you don’t want to camp you can often find accommodation at Oamarama about 30mins away or possibly find a bach to rent at Otemata 15mins.

Windsurfing event at Aviemore 1st – 3rd Jan 2011
Windsurfing social get-together. Repeat of last year's great event with 2 races each day. Simple across the lake and back race series for windsurfers. Think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.

The Aviemore Challenge Trophy event. There are trophies for each of the main classes, a very special silver plate as the main Challenge Trophy and lots of spot prizes too. The social side of the event which is primarily organised around a lovely traditional camping/sailing spot is helped by sponsorship. Entry Fee: $30

Club Xmas Sail/ Santa/ Kinloch Lodge.
You may have read in the paper that Santa visited the Club Xmas Sail at Glenorchy on Sat.... unfortunately s/he broke the mast and had to be rescued.. worthwhile noting that there is no longer a Water Taxi up there and with the recession Dart River Jet boats are finishing early. So finding a boat was a bit of a mission. Finally Kinloch Lodge came out to the rescue.. what heros, John was busy cooking dinner but took off his apron and sprinted to the boat rescuing Santa while giving instructions about the jacket potatoes over the phone.. What a star ! Many many thanks to John from Kinloch.. and to all in the club, don’t forget what a lovely place that is to visit so next time you’re up there, do pop over for a visit and give them some support.
