Patrick Haybittle NZL 308 - Sailathon report

What an inspiring sail with Olympic Windsurfer JP Tobin today! I sailed at the fastest pace I’ve ever done on an RS:X. At one stage I was using all my strength and skills to stop my board tail walking in a 30 knot gust. We covered 42km and visited10 clubs on our sailathon. Very exciting sailing. After a delayed start due to light airs. JP and I started our trip from Torbay and headed off downwind in about 15 knots. As we sailed south the wind continually built and by the time we rounded north head it was a solid 20, gusting 30 knot easterly. JP and I managed to stop and visit 10 clubs from Torbay to Wakatere, across to Kohimarama then up to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and every club in between. We stopped at all places to take a photo and pick up a shell or stone as evidence. We were very satisfied to achieve our goal but it was over way too soon. We are really keen to make it a race in the future as we had so much fun. Thanks heaps JP for keeping me company and being the official tracker. I can’t wait to do it again. Thank you to everyone who sponsored me, your support is greatly appreciated. There isn’t a better way to fundraise and train at one time. I am leaving for Italy and the RS:X Youth Worlds on Thursday night.
Cheers Patrick Haybittle NZL 308
