Estuary Update

Several CWA committee members were amongst the 100+ people who attended an Estuary update from ECAN water environment scientists on Tuesday May 10. The big question for many was when will recreational users be able to get back on the Estuary? The answer is uncertain, ranging from next summer to 2 to 3 years! What the scientists can do is measure levels of sewage contamination and corrosiveness from silt in the Estuary, and let us know when these return to normal. On the positive side it seems that the Estuary is somewhat shallower and less weedy than before, and there are alternatives: Waikuku; Lyttelton Harbour; Lake Ellesmere; or some other Pacific island; or hey - just chill and make the most of winter.

Good luck everyone,
