Please let us know by filling in the survey at the end of this email, so we can gauge the state of our community and plan accordingly.
These are dynamic times, and we'd like you to get involved, starting with the Annual General Meeting on September 7, at The Speight's Ale House, Ferry Road, from 7:30pm. Apart from the usual committee elections, we hope to have a presentation on the state of the estuary, plus it's a great opportunity to catch up and discuss places to sail.
State of the Estuary
The CWA committee, optimistic as ever, is forging ahead with a full calendar of water based wind sports events over the coming season. The Christchurch City Council is working hard to clean up our waterways, while a report from NIWA on the state of the estuary indicates the need for some changes. The September 2010 and February 2011 eartquakes have caused the estuary to subside by 0.2 to 0.5m in the north, and rise by 0.3 to 0.5m in the south, with an overall average rise of ~0.14m reducing the tidal prism volume of water by ~14%. This along with widespread liquefaction has reduced the extent of inundated areas by ~18% at mid-tide, meaning windsurfers may not be able to ride from Scott Park, and kiters will have to contend with much harder landings, and there'll be less water time all round. Don't despair, as we have a cunning plan, and by working with the CCC the end result could be better than before.
Finally, CWA subs are due, our financial year being from July 1 to June 30 each year. You can initiate payment by cash, cheque, bank transfer or credit card by going to CWA.ORG.NZ > MEMBERSHIP.
