The subject says it all - continuing high levels of contamination in the Estuary from broken and leaking sewage pipes up the Avon and Heathcote rivers mean we've had to cancel the second CWA event of the season - the first Yoda kiteboard event.

The CWA understands that signs warning against swimming (includes any water contact sports) are up at the Estuary and beaches due to sewage contamination in the Avon, Heathcote, and Waimakiriri rivers (Lake Ellesmere is contaminated too). This state of affairs could continue for a period of weeks or even months, so please stay safe out there.

Faecal contamination (raw sewage) warning in the Avon and Heathcote rivers and Estuary due to earthquake damage, Clean Up day postponed, Yoda Challenge, Club nite (includes Wanaka video), Freestyle clinics, and access issues...

Work, expected to take two years (pre-earthquake Sept 2010), has started on the Ferrymead Bridge, with contractor site access signs going up at the northern entrance to Scott Park, just below the bridge in the MPYC/MPBC car park. City Council Project Leader Peter Rivers says that the contractor requires access along the paper road beside the estuary to their site from the Northern entrance. So long as windsurfers do not block that access, they can continue to park and rig up at Scott park, although this doesn't preclude the contractor from restricting access at other times, but lets hope this is during the week.

Windsurfing and kiting social get-together. Repeat of last years great event. Simple across the lake and back race series for Windsurfers and Kiters. Think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.

In 2010, the Clean Up the World theme is “Communities caring for nature”. Participating groups will undertake activities such as protecting water sources, planting trees, reducing waste, education and awareness raising.

Clean Up the World partners with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to inspire and empower communities to "clean up, fix up and conserve their environment" by carrying out initiatives ranging from waste removal and tree planting to water and energy conservation projects.

Clean up the World event, which was scheduled for Sept 5, as we were about two weeks ahead of the Rest of the World, and the council. It's officially Sept 18-19, so we'll aim for that weekend too, maybe Saturday, or if wet and miserable then Sunday. To be confirmed in the online events calendar. http://www.cwa.org.nz/portal/index.php?option=com_redevent&view=eventlis...

Spring is in the air and the CWA membership pack is in the post - sure signs that the Annual General Meeting is just around the corner: Wednesday September 1 from 7:30pm, at the Ferry Speights Ale House. On the agenda is the usual spring clean of the committee, and while many on the current committee will be standing again, here is the opportunity for you to put your name forward to the secretary and get involved.
