Canterbury Windsports Assn News update October 2011

Canterbury's spring sailing season has had a mixed start, with some great sessions at the beach, but the first formal CWA activities being cancelled or diverted due to the post-quake state of the estuary (still unclean), or unfavourable winds at the beach. Future events on the CWA calendar are still ready to roll, and we're encouraged by the vote of support given by those who answered our online survey (results below). So much so that we have a brand new event for your calendar: Lyttelton Discovery Day, at Naval Point, from 1pm on Sunday Nov 6 (more below). Finally, all the best to those attending (and running) the 2011 NZ Freestyle Kiteboard Nationals in Tauranga next weekend 20-24th October, and GO THE AB's!

Survey: 22 people responded to our online survey, 15 windsurfers and 7 kiters: 18 identifed themselves as blokes, 3 as shelias, and 1 as other! Encouragingly, 95% want the CWA to organise some action this season. The windsurfers appeared most interested in competing against each other, with their highest vote going to slalom racing (10 votes), followed by course racing and wave riding (8 each), then beginners sessions (5), while kiters just want to push themselves Yoda comp and wave riding (5), course racing (3), freestyle and beginners (2). Both groups want to have a good time, with social nights scoring highly - there's room for improvement here.

Club night: from 7:30pm this Wednesday October 17 at the The Ferry Speight's Ale House - an opportunity to catch up on the goss.

Events: to compensate for the estuary being out of bounds, we have a brand new event for your calendar - Lyttelton Discovery Day, Naval Point, from 1pm on Sunday Nov 6. This is a combined event to enable members to take a closer look at kiting or windsurfing from Naval Point (with safety in numbers and a backup boat), stand up paddle boards, boot sale, tech talk, trainer kites, fancy dress competition, and free sausage sizzle. Tide will be going out from 2:30pm, which boosts the NE wind if any. As usual, keep an eye on the CWA website events calendar for upcoming events, contacts and updates.

Subscriptions: are now due, and can conveniently be paid by credit card or internet banking via the CWA website, or by cash/cheque at club nights, to Al at Underground, or Tim at Kitesports.

Website: If you're new, just go to the CWA website> Membership and work through the prompts to register, or if you're an exisiting member then login and work through the prompts. If you've forgotten your username or password use the 'forgotten' links to retrieve them via your email (we don't know your password but will email you a verification 'token' so you can reset your own). Then, select a payment plan and method:

- PayPal for credit/debit card.

- Internet Banking for direct credit.

- Cash or cheque then download a membership form.
