Canterbury Windsports Assn News update

Estuary Water Quality Post-Quake:

ECAN have updated their website water quality information and maps in relation to recreational use in the southern half of the Estuary where we kite & windsurf. There is now a Yellow zone (south of a line from Sandy Point across to Plover Street) indicating normal water quality from two hours before to four hours after the time of high tide at Lyttelton. At lower tides the area is closed to recreational use.

They also warn that the entire Estuary is closed for recreational use during and up to 48 hours after rainfall because additional sewage contamination is possible due to leakage from broken sewer pipes and contamination of the stormwater system. This is a timely reminder to avoid the Estuary during and after rainfall events, which regularly flush the entire Christchurch catchment into our rivers and Estuary (yuk).

For the latest see ECAN's website here.

Estuary Kite Area Access:

Following the above, Tim has been in touch with our CCC contacts to mow the Kite Area grass and reinstate the combination padlocks. Remember that we are privileged to have the use of this area, which is not a public reserve but CCC farmland, hence their request to close the gate after entry / exit. The padlock combination is available to CWA members when you login to the CWA website under MEMBERSHIP.

Windsurf Instructor Courses in Christchurch:

Intermediate Nov 5-7 & Basic 20-21

WindsurfNZ are running the first Intermediate Instructor/ Coach course for many years. Coaching styles and techniques have moved on and the world leading British system now uses a "Fast Forward" approach encompassing key principles for all skills areas. We are lucky here in NZ to have Peter Head who is a very high level Trainer and who has recently been back to the UK and retrained in some of the higher levels of the new techniques. This course is going to be AMAZING!

However, as WNZ had a few fairly dormant years, we don't actually have a lot of Basic Instructors to use as our base target audience, therefore a few lucky people will be allowed to come on this course even if they aren't Basic Instructors... they won't have a qualification at the end of it but will get heaps out of the course. This would especially be good for those wanting to coach friends or at a club without needing certificates, or those who want to fundamentally improve their understanding of the key elements of all windsurf skills. It will improve your own sailing at all levels. Fri evening and then all day Sat and Sun. 5-7 Nov $350. Also please note there are still places available for the Basic Instructors course later in Nov 20-21. For further details contact Sue 027 640 8596 (South Island) / Pete 0274 845 010 (North Island), or see the WindsurfNZ website.
