Australian windsurfing titles off Jimmys Beach - kiwis competing

The eyes of the windsurfing world are now on Hawks Nest as Jimmy's Beach hosts the Formula Windsurfing Oceanic and Australian championships.
Valuable ranking points and five spots at the March world championships in Agentina are on the line, with 50 sailors from Brazil, Greece, New Zealand and Australia competing.

The formula class of windsurfing pits sailors against one another in gruelling race format.

Competitors race four, 1.6km races each day for four days with the best performer on aggregate taking first spot.

World number five and multiple Brazilian and South American championship holder Wilhelm Schurmann headlines the international names while defending champion and event organiser Sean O'Brien from Brisbane tries to keep the title on Australian shores.

In the women's field three-time FW World Champion Allison Shreeve will be battling for the title along with Olympian Jessica Crisp.

O'Brien has planned a spectacle on and off the water, with a variety of festivities planned on the beach, including beach parties, barbecues and a free concert at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.
