WWA - Freewave Round 3 Finale - Clayton Dougan crowned again

Awesome out of control conditions for the third and last round of the Wellington Freewave series for 2010. 40 knots plus at Lyall Bay and grunty logo southerly swell saw another reduced amount of entries. But enough for two heats, a repercharge and a final.

Wellington Freewave 2010 Round 2

The Freewave returned to Plimmerton for round two of the 2010 series. Conditions were superb and the action was hot. A strong north westerly from the Tasman kindly whipped up good punchy waves for the sailors to launch off and shred to pieces. The sun bore down on those on the shore and an epic round was in the making.

Life's a breeze - windsurf into summer

The winds are stronger, the days are longer so its time to get that windsurfer thats been lurking in your garage out. Check everything is still working and safe, and get back onto the water.

Starting with the Taranaki Wavesailing Classic, one of New Zealands biggest and most social event on the windsurfing calendar, this week will feature a number of activities around the country to mark the start of the 'windsurfing season'.

In light of the new found day light hours we are going to start a gathering of sailors on Thursdays at the ditch (Evans Bay). The idea is to have a regular time to meet after work for a session at the ditch and get all levels sailing together. For now it will just be fun sailing. With time we will look at the possibility of a few friendly races or freestyle sessions.

Wellington Wave Champs / Freewave Round 1

The Wellington Wave Champs 2010 (also the first round of the freewave) was held today at Plimmerton in some pretty extreme conditions at times. The surf was large for plimmy with shoulder to head high waves breaking on the shore and it was windy. The gusts in excess of 40 knots with most sailors battening down the hatches on flat 4.0s. In 2010, the Clean Up the World theme is “Communities caring for nature”. Participating groups will undertake activities such as protecting water sources, planting trees, reducing waste, education and awareness raising.

Clean Up the World partners with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to inspire and empower communities to "clean up, fix up and conserve their environment" by carrying out initiatives ranging from waste removal and tree planting to water and energy conservation projects.

The first round of the 2010 / 2011 WWA Freewave competition will be held in September between 18th and 26th. (which weekend date to be confirmed). The Freewave three-round format is a mixture of freestyle and waves depending on the wind and sailing venue on the day. When Louis Tapper sets out to kitesurf a record-breaking 2000 kilometres along the coast of Brazil, he knows achieving his goal could ultimately be beyond his control. The Wellington adventurer, who works as a banker, left for Brazil last night kitted out with a new kiteboard and a feeling of excitement tinged with trepidation.
