Annual long distance wind riders event one huge success !

39 windsurfers and kiters from all over the South Island descended on Glenorchy on Saturday 27th Feb. for the Southern Lakes Windriders Club’s annual downwinder sail from Glenorchy to Pigeon Island. They were rewarded with a stunningly sunny and warm day. It was a spectacular site at the start with an array of coloured kites and windsurfing sails that quickly dispersed at varying speeds downwind. Winds were gusting approx 25 knots with variable and at times challenging wind conditions.

THE BIG QUEENSTOWN DOWNWINDER WILL BE HELD THIS WEEKEND AT GLENORCHY

THE FORECAST IS GOOD FOR THE WEEKEND- YEE HA....But at the moment it’s difficult to say which day, (Yesterday it looked like Sun, today its looking like Sat) so a final call of which day will be made tomorrow, I’ll email you all again….. SO HERE'S THE PROVISIONAL PLAN...

INAUGURAL AVIEMORE SUMMER BASH HUGE SUCCESS !

The first Aviemore Challenge Trophy event held at Lake Aviemore, South Island from 1-3 Jan 2010 was dubbed a great event by all those who took part as well as the organisers and their team. In all 19 windsurfers entered, slightly less than expected, but for a first event all were happy. Everyone took home a cool tee shirt as well as a dental pack, there were trophies to keep for each of the main classes, a very special silver plate as the main Challenge Trophy and  lots of spot prizes too. The social side of the event which is primarily organised around a lovely traditional camping/sailing spot was helped by sponsorship beer which added that special bonus to 'after sailing' stories !

South Coast weekend report

Monkey Is. group
This event was a fantastic success. 20 sailors; 3 sailing locations; awesome wind (approx 20-25 knots both days); 3 clubs meet up- Southern Lakes Club meets the new Invercargill Windsports Club and sailors from Dunedin; BBQ on the Sat night; at least 3 new converts to Wave sailing.... these were just some of the hilights of the recent club weekend.

Lake Aviemore Event

Fri 1 Jan 2010 - Sun 3 Jan 2010
Lake Aviemore

Jan 1-3rd. Simple across the lake and back race series for Windsurfers and Kiters. Details to follow later, but start to think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.

Windsurfing memorial poignant

This year's Big Queenstown Downwinder windsurfing and kite boarding race will be especially poignant for many participants. The race is open to all and is a social day out with a competitive edge. This year, the annual event, organised by The Southern Lakes Wind Riders Club, will also be a memorial for Queenstown windsurfer Jude Green who died on Lake Wakatipu a year ago today.

National Slalom event makes local newspapers - great coverage for sport.

The recently completed National Slalom event in Dunedin made great reading in 2 local newspapers. A great article on James Dinnis in the Tranaki Daily Times, and equally good coverage of Sue Bradley's win in the ODT make good reading.
