Youth Winners at Sail Auckland 2011

At an ISAF Grade 1 event like 2011 Sail Auckland Regatta the big name Olympic sailors tend to get the spotlight, when there are plenty of interesting and hard fought battles going on at age-group level across all the fleets. Of the RS:X 8.5 male youth sailors Sven Pedersen came out on top of Enzo Pla in second and Kal Rutter in third. In the female youth equivalent NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team representatives from 2010 Georgia Schofield was the top placed sailor ahead of Naomi Mannering and Isobel Hawkins. When combined the female winner, Georgia Schofield, was the second best placed youth sailor overall in the 8.5.

Final day - Sail Auckland

Sail Auckland 2011 is over with gold medals going to Tom Ashley and Kate Ellingham in the RS:X, Andrew Murdoch and Sara Winther in the Laser and Radial, Nick Rogers and Chris Grube(GBR) in the 470, Dan Slater in the Finn and Marcus Hansen and Aaron Hume-Merry in the 49er.

Day 3, Sail Auckland - RS:X leaders Ashley and Ellingham continue to dominate

On day three consistency was key in the shifty winds and Tom Ashley blew off the chasing pack
by coming home with two race wins from two races sailed. It was a similar story in the Women’s fleet where Kate Ellingham dominated on day three scoring two wins and consolidating her lead on the fleet going into the final day.

Day 2 RS:X report - Sail Auckland

Tom Ashley continues to reign supreme in the Men’s RS:X fleet, sailing three races today, the Olympic champs leads the fleet but things are tight at the top of the board. Just three points separate first and fourth place after a total of five races. Ellingham won today’s two opening races in the RS:X 8.5 windsurfing, then placed second and has opened up a small lead on rival Natalia Kosinska two points adrift in second place. Justina Sellers is third.

Day 1 RS:X report, Sail Auckland

Sail Auckland 2011 got underway today with nine fleets racing on three courses scattered up the Hauraki Gulf north of Takapuna Beach in a westerly offshore breeze which was light and shifty at times but provided good racing across all classes. In what will no doubt be an interesting battle over the next three days, New Zealand’s best including Tom Ashley and Jon-Paul Tobin today started battling it out with internationals Dorian van Rijsselberge from the Netherlands, and Lee Byunggun of Korea.

Sail Auckland starts today - includes Olympic class RS:X

Sail Auckland is an ISAF Grade 1 Olympic Classes Regatta to be held 2 – 6 February 2011. In 2011 for the first time the event will be hosted from the Takapuna Boating Club on the North Shore of Auckland. Competing classes include RS:X, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, 420, 470, 29er, 49er, Tornado & 2.4R. The World’s best will be on the Men’s RS:X race track with both NZL Sailing Team representatives – Tom Ashley and Jon-Paul Tobin in the fleet plus top international Dorian van Rijsselberge from the Netherlands. Former 470 helm, and one of New Zealand’s youngest Olympians in 2008, Carl Evans is now on the board and will go head to head with Ashley and Tobin at Sail Auckland 2011.
