RS:X Worlds get underway – Ashley in 3rd

It was a long day on the water for sailors at the 2010 RS:X World Championships where racing kicked off last night in Kerteminde, Denmark. Tom Ashley is in third place and Jon-Paul Tobin in ninth at this early stage in the six day series. The women’s fleet never left the beach.

Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta - RS:X windsurfing - J P Tobin finishes 6th and Tom Ashley 11th

The 2010 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta gold races are completed. Natalia Kosinska is best finisher for NZL Women in 24th place.

New Zealand’s Olympic class windsurfers converge on Weymouth, England in preparation for 2010 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.

Among New Zealand’s hottest medal prospects is reigning Olympic Champion in men’s board sailing, Tom Ashley who won silver earlier this year at Princess Sofia Regatta in Mallorca, Spain. Jon-Paul Tobin, Stephanie Williams, Alice Monk and Natalia Kosinskawill also be competing in the RS:X windsurfing class

Jon-Paul Tobin finishes 10th in the Men’s RS:X windsurfing at the 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherlands.

Despite carrying an injury which resulted in a DNF in the 7th race JP held on to qualify for the medal race, but was unable to improve his position. Even so he was the second most successful sailor for the NZ squad, finishing 10th out of a fleet of 100. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have won the silver medal in the 49er after improving their position from 3rd going into the medal round.

2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta - RS:X windsurfing : JP Tobin makes medal race despite DNF in final heats

New Zealand is in the medal race line up in the 49er and the Men’s RS:X for the final day of 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherlands – round five of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Despite a DNF in the first race of the day, Tobin followed it up with a 15th and he goes into the medal race in tenth place overall.

Day three of 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta sees Burling and Tuke move into the top five of the 49er fleet, and Tobin improve to seventh in the Men’s RS:X. Two days of competition remain at round five of the ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta in the Netherlands.

Racing at 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, the Netherlands ran through until late evening after interruptions during the day when the light breeze collapsed.

2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta underway - JP 6th in RS:X windsurfing

Racing started overnight in Medemblik, the Netherlands for New Zealand sailors competing at the 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta. Jon-Paul Tobin (pictured left) represents New Zealand in the 100-strong Men’s RS:X fleet. In racing last night the North Shore board sailor started off with a seventh place in race one followed up with two fifths in races two and three. At the end of the first day of the series Tobin’s pointscore is 17 and putting him in sixth place in the standings. Mashiah Nimrod of Israel has the early lead in the class.
