Only three of the current ten Olympic yachting classes are reasonably assured of a place in the start line for Brazil in 2016. The RS:X Board will have to undergo a double trial if it is to remain in 2016. The Board/Kite-board would be chosen after Evaluation Trials. A regional imbalance (areas like Oceania and Africa not well represented), poor spectator and TV audiences, and competition for places with new sports such as golf and rugby are all drivers behind the moves to reduce and possibly remove sailing from the Olympics. These factors were highlighted in the WNZ submission to SPARC for funding.
