The heat between kiteboarders and windsurfers is on. As the wind riders fight for the last sailing ticket into the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, in Rio de Janeiro, the International Kiteboarding Association and the RS:X Class have published an identical article on the "10 reasons why..." their sport should go Olympic.

Kiteboarding Olympic demonstration misfires in Miami

The 2016 Olympics will hold some big changes for the sport of sailing and if the Kiteboard Class has its way the inclusion of Kiteboarding will be one of those changes. The Class is making a big push to put Kiteboard racing in to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro and as a prelude to the big show had set up an exhibition race this past weekend as sort of a litmus test. So how did it go? (report from

Nelson - Kiteboarder dies in high winds

A 35-year-old Tahunanui man has died in while kite boarding in strong winds north of Nelson. The accident happened at about 3.30pm at Wakapuaka on farm land off State Highway 6. Police said an extreme wind gust of wind lifted the man high off the ground and blew him into some trees. "He then came into contact with trees and the ground before coming to rest some distance away in farm land," Sergeant Shane Miles said.

Local windsurfing contacts wanted for summer media commentaries

LAST CALL - Radio stations often have a spot where they chat to someone about the conditions for surfing etc. each day, just a couple of minutes usually, maybe only once or twice a week. It would be great if we could get a list of contacts who would be prepared to comment on the local conditions for windsurfing on an occasional basis and maybe add a few comments about the sport, how to get started, how to stay safe etc. This would obviously suit someone running a business related to windsurfing, kiteboarding, SUP etc.

Nevin Sayre - Broadening the scope of junior programs

Before Nevin Sayre was a five-time U.S. National Windsurfing Champion, he was a four time college sailing All-American. Sayre not only understands the competitive side of sailing, he understands that competition isn’t what sailing is all about. So it is no shock to him that the sport in the U.S. is struggling to turn youth sailors into life sailors, because the focus in most junior programs is to turn youth sailors into youth racers. Here he explains:

Tauranga AKC kite/windsurf race day (27 Nov) postponed

BOP Windsurfers: Tauranga AKC kite/windsurf race day postponed until further notice - The call has been made,...........and after all that anticipation!
SUP anyone? Could be the only action to be had this weekend.

More on the Olympic decisions by ISAF - a personal view

Paul Henderson, former President of ISAF thinks windsurfing is no longer relevant. For many of us windsurfing is a personal thing and both the Olympics and ISAF are not particularly relevant, however it is a significant world stage which raises the profile of the sport and brings in new blood. Imagine what it would be like if windsurfing was freed from the constraints of being a sailing hybrid, and was allowed to show its true colours! This is my personal response to this view and I'd appreciate feedback (Bruce Spedding).
