Olympic withdrawal by JP Tobin highlights a troubled relationship between windsurfing and Yachting NZ

J P Tobin announced his decision to not compete at the Olympics in Rio despite qualifying. The reasons behind this, and the relationship between JP Tobin may be complex, but the resulting publicity has surfaced considerable dissatisfaction with the way Yachting NZ has treated windsurfing, it's most successful sailing class.

The story was initially broken in the popular press

2016 Groundswell New Zealand Windsurf Slalom Nationals results

After 3 frustrating days of waiting for wind the 2016 nationals are over.
Thursday and Friday offered up the minimum required to squeeze through 7 rounds of racing.
Saturday was supposed to bring the big winds, unfortunately the wind was a no show.
So in the end, on Thursday there were 5 rounds for the Gold fleet, Youth/Junior/Womens & 2 rounds for the Silver. On Friday managed another 2 rounds for all Fleets.
That allowed a result for the event & winners were found for all the fleets.
The Fleets were :

2 Gold Fleets
1 Youth / Junior / Womens
1 Silver

Gold Fleet Winners.

Sailing safety in the silly season - we are all responsible.

It's that time of the year again. Lots of people travelling to different and sometimes new locations to sail, more people on the water and less experience/common sense. The number of fatalities so far is disappointing, and one of the fingers is being pointed at conflicted use of water - so be extra careful of other water users, small and big.
