Taranaki Windsurfing Club

Taranaki Wave Classic

The organisers did a brilliant job of organising the event but could not control the wind - but despite the lack of this essential component a great weekend was had by all. Over 80 windsurfers from as far away as Dunedin spent the weekend floating around on their biggest windsurfers or stand-up paddling (SUP), a popular alternative for windless windsurfers.

Taranaki Wave Classic - Following a long history of events held in Taranaki, the Taranaki Wave Classic will continue to put the emphasis on fun.
The event will be an Expression Session format, where competitors will free-sail in whatever conditions occur at the chosen location for that day. There will be no heats, no man on man elimination and no stress. The top 10 riders will be selected for a super session.

2010 Carbon Art Rodgers Dental New Zealand Wavesailing Nationals

The 2010 windsurfing wave nationals final was a family affair with team La Franchie reaching the top two positions. Chris dominated the final, as he dominated the rest of the competition. He consistently landed aerials off the outside peak and was laying in the most radical turns. These were vertical bottoms turns flowing at full speed onto the other rail and gauging 270° back into the white water. The thousands of top turns Taranaki has gifted these two brothers, showed through in their smooth style, wave timing and selection. Chris is the leading sailor in Taranaki at the moment and is showing the standard required for all the aspiring champion wave sailors out there. Tom Taylor showed he is not just a free style maestro, and has top skills in waves as well. Lots of critical hits and aerials gave him a deserved 3rd place this year.

August 2009—Spring is fast approaching, and it’s the time of year that brings the combination of pristine south-west swells and consistent cross-offshore breezes to Taranaki, New Zealand’s home of wavesailing. New Zealand’s most popular windsurfing event, the Taranaki Wave Classic, will be held over the October Labour Day weekend (Oct 23rd–26th), bringing together sailors from all over the country (and even further afield) for a celebration of all things windsurfing.

The recently completed National Slalom event in Dunedin made great reading in 2 local newspapers. A great article on James Dinnis in the Tranaki Daily Times, and equally good coverage of Sue Bradley's win in the ODT make good reading.
