South Island Cup Report

The first round of the South Island Cup got underway on the 5th Dec' in Dunedin with a perfect sunny day. We had 18 men and 6 women enter, so the men were split into two heats so the starts weren't to dangerous!

We started out in 15-18 knots with most on 7m sails, had 2 rounds then a short break, another 2 rounds in similar conditions, at which time the tide was getting a little low so some of the marks had to be moved. The next 2 rounds the wind had increased slightly, some changed down to 6.4/5.9m sails and smaller boards.

Join a club or start your own

A windsurfing club is a great way to get into windsurfing. Your local windsurfing club will will introduce you into your local windsurfing community. A solo sport like windsurfing can make it hard to get advice on where to sail, what to buy and what to do. By joining a club you'll get all these things an so much more. BBQs, film evenings, instruction days, trips away, competitions, friends and sailing partners.

Jan 1-3rd. Simple across the lake and back race series for Windsurfers and Kiters. Details to follow later, but start to think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.

This year's Big Queenstown Downwinder windsurfing and kite boarding race will be especially poignant for many participants. The race is open to all and is a social day out with a competitive edge. This year, the annual event, organised by The Southern Lakes Wind Riders Club, will also be a memorial for Queenstown windsurfer Jude Green who died on Lake Wakatipu a year ago today.

The recently completed National Slalom event in Dunedin made great reading in 2 local newspapers. A great article on James Dinnis in the Tranaki Daily Times, and equally good coverage of Sue Bradley's win in the ODT make good reading.
