South Island Cup Report

The first round of the South Island Cup got underway on the 5th Dec' in Dunedin with a perfect sunny day. We had 18 men and 6 women enter, so the men were split into two heats so the starts weren't to dangerous!

We started out in 15-18 knots with most on 7m sails, had 2 rounds then a short break, another 2 rounds in similar conditions, at which time the tide was getting a little low so some of the marks had to be moved. The next 2 rounds the wind had increased slightly, some changed down to 6.4/5.9m sails and smaller boards.

Join a club or start your own

A windsurfing club is a great way to get into windsurfing. Your local windsurfing club will will introduce you into your local windsurfing community. A solo sport like windsurfing can make it hard to get advice on where to sail, what to buy and what to do. By joining a club you'll get all these things an so much more. BBQs, film evenings, instruction days, trips away, competitions, friends and sailing partners.

Well its time to put away the skis and snowboards and dust off all your summer wind toys. Some of us can report that the water is not that bad ! Quite a few sailors have been back out on the water already and some of the crazy kiters never stopped (see story later). We’re hoping for a windy season.

Well, it's been awhile! The season is finally about to start, with warmer weather and nice wind, so what better time to have our AGM. We have set the date as Tuesday 12th October, to be held at The Cabbage Tree at 7.30pm. We have lots to cover, such as event ideas, what equipment we need to get funding for, and our elections for the management commitee. Please note that to vote or apply for a postion you must be a financial member. All those that became financial members at the beginning are covered until next year. Membership is currently $40 per annum.

NEW COURSE! This is a new course covering coaching for introduction to short board skills, beach starts, harness, footstraps, waterstarts and gybes. The course which is based on the RYA Fast Forward key principles is a great update and progression course for existing instructors wanting to revalidate. If there are spare spaces we may take people who are not already basic instructors, this will improve your own skills as well as teaching you good progressions for developing windsurfers (though you will not receive official certification unless you’ve also done the basic instructors course).

Windsurfing and kiting social get-together. Repeat of last years great event. Simple across the lake and back race series for Windsurfers and Kiters. Think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.

39 windsurfers and kiters from all over the South Island descended on Glenorchy on Saturday 27th Feb. for the Southern Lakes Windriders Club’s annual downwinder sail from Glenorchy to Pigeon Island. They were rewarded with a stunningly sunny and warm day. It was a spectacular site at the start with an array of coloured kites and windsurfing sails that quickly dispersed at varying speeds downwind. Winds were gusting approx 25 knots with variable and at times challenging wind conditions.
