Life's a breeze - windsurf into summer

Sat 22 Oct 2011 - Sun 30 Oct 2011

The winds are stronger, the days are longer so its time to get that windsurfer thats been lurking in your garage out. Check everything is still working and safe, and get back onto the water.

Starting with the Taranaki Wavesailing Classic, one of New Zealands biggest and most social event on the windsurfing calendar, this week will feature a number of activities around the country to mark the start of the 'windsurfing season'.

IMPORTANT: Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 POSTPONED

The Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 scheduled to run in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday November 27 and 28 2010 has been deferred until an appropriate date after the Christmas holidays.

This is due to high tide at 9am Saturday and 10 am Sunday meaning the Estuary is not a viable venue as the water will be too low by the time and if the wind comes up, and I am told there may be little interest from local competitors if we shift to Lyttelton Harbour or Lake Ellesmere. Lyttelton is also difficult to set a course.

Wind Sports Southern 2010-2011 AGM (TONIGHT!)

Tue 12 Oct 2010
Cabbage Tree, Invercargill

Well, it's been awhile! The season is finally about to start, with warmer weather and nice wind, so what better time to have our AGM. We have set the date as Tuesday 12th October, to be held at The Cabbage Tree at 7.30pm. We have lots to cover, such as event ideas, what equipment we need to get funding for, and our elections for the management commitee. Please note that to vote or apply for a postion you must be a financial member. All those that became financial members at the beginning are covered until next year. Membership is currently $40 per annum.

INAUGURAL AVIEMORE SUMMER BASH HUGE SUCCESS !

The first Aviemore Challenge Trophy event held at Lake Aviemore, South Island from 1-3 Jan 2010 was dubbed a great event by all those who took part as well as the organisers and their team. In all 19 windsurfers entered, slightly less than expected, but for a first event all were happy. Everyone took home a cool tee shirt as well as a dental pack, there were trophies to keep for each of the main classes, a very special silver plate as the main Challenge Trophy and  lots of spot prizes too. The social side of the event which is primarily organised around a lovely traditional camping/sailing spot was helped by sponsorship beer which added that special bonus to 'after sailing' stories !

South Island Cup Report

The first round of the South Island Cup got underway on the 5th Dec' in Dunedin with a perfect sunny day. We had 18 men and 6 women enter, so the men were split into two heats so the starts weren't to dangerous!

We started out in 15-18 knots with most on 7m sails, had 2 rounds then a short break, another 2 rounds in similar conditions, at which time the tide was getting a little low so some of the marks had to be moved. The next 2 rounds the wind had increased slightly, some changed down to 6.4/5.9m sails and smaller boards.

18-19 February. Please find attached a leaflet about the fun weekend coming up, do make an effort to come along, it should be great to get together and we're trying to put on lots of activities to keep you entertained and hopefully to give you some of you a chance to try something new, buy something new (or old), or to learn something new. Please tell your friends and print off the leaflet and put it up wherever you can. We do want this to happen at Glenorchy, so if there isn't a NW due it will probably get postponed to the following weekend. So keep in touch.
