Windsurfing New Zealand Club News May 2013

Its that time of the year again when we ask you to pay your affiliation fee and start thinking about next season. This modest fee helps pay for the event insurance we offer clubs, our membership fees with ISAF, and the costs of advocacy and promotion of the sport.

Sail number registration - all club members are entitled to one so get yours now!

You are required to be a member of an affiliated club to take part in WNZ sanctioned events - this is a requirement of the insurance cover WNZ provides to clubs. Events may also require you to have a sail number.

IMPORTANT: Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 POSTPONED

The Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 scheduled to run in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday November 27 and 28 2010 has been deferred until an appropriate date after the Christmas holidays.

This is due to high tide at 9am Saturday and 10 am Sunday meaning the Estuary is not a viable venue as the water will be too low by the time and if the wind comes up, and I am told there may be little interest from local competitors if we shift to Lyttelton Harbour or Lake Ellesmere. Lyttelton is also difficult to set a course.

Wind Sports Southern 2010-2011 AGM (TONIGHT!)

Tue 12 Oct 2010
Cabbage Tree, Invercargill

Well, it's been awhile! The season is finally about to start, with warmer weather and nice wind, so what better time to have our AGM. We have set the date as Tuesday 12th October, to be held at The Cabbage Tree at 7.30pm. We have lots to cover, such as event ideas, what equipment we need to get funding for, and our elections for the management commitee. Please note that to vote or apply for a postion you must be a financial member. All those that became financial members at the beginning are covered until next year. Membership is currently $40 per annum.

INAUGURAL AVIEMORE SUMMER BASH HUGE SUCCESS !

The first Aviemore Challenge Trophy event held at Lake Aviemore, South Island from 1-3 Jan 2010 was dubbed a great event by all those who took part as well as the organisers and their team. In all 19 windsurfers entered, slightly less than expected, but for a first event all were happy. Everyone took home a cool tee shirt as well as a dental pack, there were trophies to keep for each of the main classes, a very special silver plate as the main Challenge Trophy and  lots of spot prizes too. The social side of the event which is primarily organised around a lovely traditional camping/sailing spot was helped by sponsorship beer which added that special bonus to 'after sailing' stories !

It's normal practice to hold the WNZ AGM at the Nationals as this is the one time when most of those active in the organisation are able to get together. The actual date, time and place are to be confirmed - the practical approach over the last few years is to hold the AGM during down time (which does occur) during the event, i.e. while waiting for wind ... so anyone planning to attend who will not actually be at the event needs to be aware of this and make sure we have your contact details.

Windsurfing and kiting social get-together. Repeat of a great event. Simple across the lake and back race series for Windsurfers and Kiters. Think about this as an option for Xmas/New Year, there's always lots of windsurfers and kiters camping there. Very social.
Possibility of and Upwind/Downwind race as well on New Years eve.

A windsurfing club is a great way to get into windsurfing. Your local windsurfing club will will introduce you into your local windsurfing community. A solo sport like windsurfing can make it hard to get advice on where to sail, what to buy and what to do. By joining a club you'll get all these things an so much more. BBQs, film evenings, instruction days, trips away, competitions, friends and sailing partners.

Just giving you some advance notice of an event which will be happening on Lake Hawea 30.Nov/1.Dec. Organised by the Hotel and some local kiters and supported by the club. It will focus around camping and sailing together, with a good night out at the hotel on the Saturday. There may be a ‘downwinder’ and/or some form of freestyle fun competition too, though the exact format is yet to be finalised. (Sorry those of you doing windsurf South Island Cup but we'll always clash with something and it is the windy time there). Contact. Yohann 02108435786.

Please do come along with ideas about what you’d like out of the club.…..Last year nothing much happened with the club, apart from buying some great beginners/improvers gear to encourage new members (many thanks to Craig for all his hard work to make this happen)…. So this year we’re looking for as many people as possible to get involved so we can share the load and keep this club active. Please think about whether you’d be prepared to do just a little bit, even if it’s just being a contact for new members in your area.
