IMPORTANT: Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 POSTPONED

The Windsurf South Island Cup Round 1 scheduled to run in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday November 27 and 28 2010 has been deferred until an appropriate date after the Christmas holidays.

This is due to high tide at 9am Saturday and 10 am Sunday meaning the Estuary is not a viable venue as the water will be too low by the time and if the wind comes up, and I am told there may be little interest from local competitors if we shift to Lyttelton Harbour or Lake Ellesmere. Lyttelton is also difficult to set a course.

Clearwater @ Show Weekend:

Classic nor'west weather made for happy CWA campers at Lake Clearwater over Show Weekend. Friday and Saturday were calm & sunny in the morning, and windy and sunny in the afternoon. Sunday saw the nor'wester die away, only to be replaced by a cooler sou'west change. Three days of action in this fantastic mountain location took me five days back in the office to recover!

CWA News Update

Had my first post winter water session after work tonight - at the beach of course. As for the estuary, the news suggests the southern part of the estuary (i.e. the Humphreys Drive windsurf area) is back to normal levels (i.e. very poor - avoid swimming.

CWA - 1st Yoda event cancelled due to quake contamination

The subject says it all - continuing high levels of contamination in the Estuary from broken and leaking sewage pipes up the Avon and Heathcote rivers mean we've had to cancel the second CWA event of the season - the first Yoda kiteboard event.

FYI: Quake Update - WARNING on Water Quality in Christchurch

The CWA understands that signs warning against swimming (includes any water contact sports) are up at the Estuary and beaches due to sewage contamination in the Avon, Heathcote, and Waimakiriri rivers (Lake Ellesmere is contaminated too). This state of affairs could continue for a period of weeks or even months, so please stay safe out there.

Almost $12 million was committed yesterday by the Government, Environment Canterbury (ECan), Fonterra and Ngai Tahu, to be spent on measures including native planting, fencing and scientific research. Speaking yesterday at the tiny Ngati Moki Marae near Ellesmere's edge, Environment Minister Nick Smith said the focus would be on reducing nutrients from agricultural runoff, which would require a tougher approach on rogue farmers. Some lakeside land would have to be bought, he said.

The Community and Public Health division of Canterbury District Health Board has lifted the health warning at Taylors Mistake and in Lyttelton Harbour. Environment Canterbury has been monitoring a range of sites over the last six weeks following the February 22 earthquake to track levels of bacteria contamination.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey says water in both these areas is now suitable for recreational use.

It's a difficult time we are going through and I hope with all my heart that you and your families are all in good health. Sorry it's been a lackluster end to the season but you can rejoice in the fact that Spring is only 7 months away. - Russell.
