Auckland Slalom Series 2011-12 Race 1 This Sunday

Sun 18 Sep 2011
Auckland

The Bayswater Watersports Race day 1 of the AWA slalom series will be on THIS SUNDAY at Bayswater.

Registration desk will be open from 9.00 am and skippers meeting will be held at 10.00 am sharp with a first possible start at 10.30 am. This modefies the original Notice of Race Schedule as we want to take into account the tides for this venue.

Gates to the domain will be open at 8.00 am.

The venue is next to the Bayswater Yachtclub on Sir Peter Blake Drive. The park is called Quinton Park. Drive down the steep access path and onto the grass area. Pick a spot that is clear of the ramp and not too soggy.

Sailors under 18, dont forget to get your parents to sign the entry form. For the rest, registration forms will be available at the venue.

Bring cash or a cheque for the correct amount.

Food and drink will be provided after racing is concluded. We may have this on the deck at Bayswater Windsport or in Quinton park.

Laurence Carey from Auckland, New Zealand wins the Maui Race Series junior division

Going into the fourth and final heat, the wins were divided among Carey; Deniz Bicakci; a sophomore-to-be at Kihei Charter School; and Casey Rehrer, an 8th-grader-to-be at Seabury Hall. After a close start, Carey and Bicakci were able to pull away when Rehrer stumbled at the first mark. Carey then held off Bicacki. Carey also took eighth in the semipro division. He won his first junior heat, but had trouble in the next two.
Carey has been busy in his first year of competitive racing. In November, he was seventh in the Auckland Slalom Championship, racing against men. He was also seventh in the International Funboard Class Association World Slalom Championships' 17-and-under division last month in Curacao. Carey is a flanker on his school's rugby team as well.

2011 Auckland Freestyle Champs - results and report

It was a great day for the 2011 Auckland Freestyle Champs. Due to the forecast we decided to run this years event as a Freestyle/Wave comp and we certainly weren't disappointed. 25-30 Knots NE at Takapuna with a decent swell rolling in. 12 competitors in total incl Tim and Eric who came all the way up from Wellington. Good effort boys!

Great to see that nearly half of the fleet were juniors 18 years and under. The youngest competitor, Maija at only 11 years of age showed everyone that she is determined to get to the top over the next couple of years. So watch out everyone!

If you ever though a lifestyle change to teaching windsurfing was an option then this may interest you. Full school setup (or parts thereof) has been posted on Trademe.

If you are associated with a yacht or windsurfing club that wanted a set of gear for teaching this is also a great opportunity to get the gear you need as the seller is also prepared to break it down to order as an option.

Auckland Windsurfing Association AGM - Minutes by: Daniel Thomas – President

Greg Olver has offered to take on the role of Media officer for a 3 month period initially
Use of a regular radio slot for a windsurfing forecast in the region was discussed and thought to not
be a good/productive use of resources as most people utilise online resources such as windguru.cz,
windsurf.co.nz and metservice.co.nz. Brian smith commented that he used to do it a long time ago
and said it required a big commitment on the part of the person designated to report each day

Alexander wraps up the event (big thank you to him). Not a huge turn out but great to get this event off the ground and there is obviously energy to carry it forward (breaking news, there may be another freestyle event towards the end of the season). Big thanks to all other sponsors and volunteers that helped make this event possible. Read the analysis of where we could go next with this discipline...
