Windsurfing - Youth Slalom Clinic

Despite a lack of wind, and several showers coming through, a good time was had by all at the youth slalom clinic. The spot prizes from Carbon Art went down a treat, and at the end a Carbon Art slalom board came out for a spin – it was apparently “amazing!” Here are a few photos from the day .. http://youth.windsurfingnz.org/

Youth Windsurfing Slalom Clinic - change of venue!

Due to wind conditions and safety concerns, the youth slalom clinic which is being held this Saturday, December 17th, will be at LAKE PUPUKE instead of Takapuna Beach as originally advertised. Same start time, 11am. Remember Alan of Madloop is based at the lake and has gear to hire if you need it.

AWA youth slalom clinic is on this Saturday at Takapuna beach

Just a reminder that the AWA youth slalom clinic is on this Saturday at Takapuna beach. 11am start time, and we hope to finish around 2pm (with a lunch break in the middle) but it depends on the wind.

This event is for all windsurfers under the age of 18. Come and learn slalom race tricks and techniques and join in some fun racing (weather permitting). Spot prizes from the awesome Carbon Art!

Bring your own gear or hire a board/sail from Madloop Windsurfing School. (Techno, shortboard, whatever you've got will be fine.)

$10 per person, bring your own lunch.

Hope to see you there.

Watersports South Pacific round of the AWA 2011/12 Slalom Series

The forecast is looking good so the Watersports South Pacific round of the 2011/12 slalom series is on this Saturday at Pt Chev. First possible race start will be at 0930 so make sure you get there early, we're going to try and get through things quickly as the tide is low mid afternoon and we also want to give everyone time to vote in the election.

2011 New Zealand Freestyle Nationals - fantastic conditions and a strong competition

The 2011 New Zealand Freestyle Nationals were once again held in Auckland with fantastic conditions and a strong group of entries.

All the way up from Wellington came Tim Haxell, Eric Torvelainen and Robert Harrison, greeted by the local Auckland freestyle scene, sunny blue sky and a building SW breeze.

Support the AWA Takapuna Wharf Petition

The Harbour Access Trust in association with the Takapuna Business Association and Auckland Council are currently exploring the possibility of the development of a wharf and commuter ferry service at the Northern end of Takapuna beach. The Auckland Windsurfing Association and a number of local residents have significant environmental, safety and viability concerns about any such development and believe that the re-purposing of the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park as a pre-cursor to such a move. ... with a great forecast that will line up some spectacular racing. First start is scheduled for 9.30 am tomorrow, Saturday 1st October. Venue is Farm Cove. See the map below for the location.

There is a large grass area and nice beach for launching. Wind is forecast for 20 kts plus and at farm cover it may in fact be a bit stronger. Due to the tide, we have until 1 pm to complete 16 races (8 each fleet) so hence an earlier start.

Another magic Tauranga morning raised a few concerns early on, but those enthusiastic competitors who had made the effort to roll down to Fergusson Park early were more than happy to register and wait. Along with Alexander from A’ND Distribution, some of Auckland’s finest sailors had also made the trip down for a bit of ‘Bay action’.

The Orewa Beach Artificial Reef Project: 3 reefs located obliquely to the shore approximately 375m and 700m off the Orewa Beach foreshore. This is a heads-up about the public submission process starting for The Orewa Beach Reef Project. I'm wanting to bring to your attention the proposed artificial reef planned for Orewa beach and if you are aware of the implications? I appreciate that a lot of you Windsurf/SurfSUP/Kite at Orewa or even live there so should have an interest in this issue (either for - or - against) so you need to get on to the public submission about the reef ASAP: PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS CLOSE 5PM 27th SEPTEMBER!

Auckland Council: Update on the Shakespear Open Sanctuary project now that it has been nearly a month since the last aerial application occurred on the open sanctuary. The three aerial bait applications were completed successfully and in the best possible timeframe. The early completion of the aerial operation means we will be able to open the park earlier than first indicated. We are now working toward a reopening date of Thursday 1 December 2011. Ongoing monitoring of bait breakdown may allow us to bring this date forward even further.

Windsurfers are backing a petition against plans to create a ferry wharf at Takapuna. They have concerns about the safety of commercial ferries using the same area they enjoy. Auckland Windsurfing Association vice-president Anton Blijlevens says the beach is popular with surfers when there is an northeasterly wind. "We don't want them ruining our little spot of paradise," he says.

Auckland windsurfers attended a meeting about a proposal to remove the Takapuna camp ground. The Auckland Windsurfing Association (AWA) is taking the position that a wharf could compromise the windsurfing environment and that a ferry service will pose significant safety concerns. The AWA is interested in contacting any other groups with an interest in opposing the proposal.

Going into the fourth and final heat, the wins were divided among Carey; Deniz Bicakci; a sophomore-to-be at Kihei Charter School; and Casey Rehrer, an 8th-grader-to-be at Seabury Hall. After a close start, Carey and Bicakci were able to pull away when Rehrer stumbled at the first mark. Carey then held off Bicacki. Carey also took eighth in the semipro division. He won his first junior heat, but had trouble in the next two.
Carey has been busy in his first year of competitive racing. In November, he was seventh in the Auckland Slalom Championship, racing against men. He was also seventh in the International Funboard Class Association World Slalom Championships' 17-and-under division last month in Curacao. Carey is a flanker on his school's rugby team as well.

It was a great day for the 2011 Auckland Freestyle Champs. Due to the forecast we decided to run this years event as a Freestyle/Wave comp and we certainly weren't disappointed. 25-30 Knots NE at Takapuna with a decent swell rolling in. 12 competitors in total incl Tim and Eric who came all the way up from Wellington. Good effort boys!

Great to see that nearly half of the fleet were juniors 18 years and under. The youngest competitor, Maija at only 11 years of age showed everyone that she is determined to get to the top over the next couple of years. So watch out everyone!
