AWA windsport festival

AWA windsports festivalThe AWA windsport festival got underway last Sunday. The day started off with the promise of 15-20 knots from the SW from metservice. The sun started to make its mark on the water in front of the Bayswater yacht club early morning as the grass area adjacent started to fill up with sailors. Kites were inflated and sails were unfurled.

Join a club or start your own

A windsurfing club is a great way to get into windsurfing. Your local windsurfing club will will introduce you into your local windsurfing community. A solo sport like windsurfing can make it hard to get advice on where to sail, what to buy and what to do. By joining a club you'll get all these things an so much more. BBQs, film evenings, instruction days, trips away, competitions, friends and sailing partners.

The Auckland Windsurfing Association is now ready to be officially formed.
The aim is to incorporate the Association. Incorporation means that the Association’s property (money, rescue boat? website, buoys, trophies etc) will in future be held by the Association instead of by the members for the time being. The Association can also then enter contracts and open a bank account. The members will only have to pay their subscriptions and can not become liable for any debts or liability the Association may incur.

It looks like we may need the assistance of the Association in objecting to a recent bylaw passed by the Auckland Regional Council, I believe that this bylaw has been significantly influenced by incidents with kite surfers at many Auckland beaches over the past few years. Essentially the ARC and harbour master are sectioning off some of our most popular beaches whereby to restrict areas where you are able to windsurf and kite surf.

Plenty of top international windsurfers are already in the country for the RS:X World Championships in January and will compete in this weekend’s Nationals as preparation. Over 60 windsurfers are already entered and with international competitors arriving into New Zealand daily, organisers of the National Championships are anticipating that around 80 windsurfers will take part. Just 20 to 30 of the expected total are New Zealanders with the majority being internationals here early for the World Championships.

Shoal Bay in Bayswater is a popular spot for kite surfers and windsurfers in south-westerly and westerly winds. It is described as the North Shore's most consistent and safe location, especially in outgoing tides, on a New Zealand internet forum for the sport.
