Auckland Freestyle Windsurfing event postoned

The event has been postponed due to a lack of wind today. Forecast looked promising but it had quiet a bit of south in it when we turned up. Never pushed through strong enough. So we called it off at 12.30. All entries will stay in (thanks for turning up everyone) and we'll put it on standby again. Maybe next weekend (Sunday is a non event day though) or the week after. Also thanks to Pete, Jim etc. for your help and support

The Auckland Freestyle Windsurfing Champs - more details

The event - The Auckland Freestyle Champs is a comp designed to promote freestyle in the Auckland area and nationwide in a fun environment.
The event is run on a standby mode to get the best possible conditions. This year the standby period is set for the whole month of May with Sat/Sun being possible competition days. Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be an expert to participate. If a jibe is the most radical maneuver you can do, that’s fine as long as you do it with a big smile on your face! You might get inspired by tricks that other riders perform and try one yourself. There is no pressure or other competition hassle, it’s still a “fun” event!

The Formula Nationals got under way with the briefing and registration on the Thursday (unfortunately there were only 5 entries), but not enough wind for any racing.

Result : 2nd. Great conditions for day one of the 2010 National's if you wanted to go fishing!!!...fortunately the Dutch team were organised enough to kit their coach boat out with a couple of lines so fishing it was, despite the complete lack of breeze one race was completed (3rd) and one fish was caught...and released.

Olliver GunmanThursday 4th December brought together some of NZ best sailors to promote windsurfing as a sport and to officially launch the six new Techno boards destined for Tauranga. They are courtesy of the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy and funded by TECT. At $5800 apiece fully kitted out, the boards aren't cheap but spokesman Stuart Pedersen is adamant they'll be a great investment for the sport's future. "Getting these boards is huge - they'll provide a pathway from learning to windsurf through to getting into serious racing without having to commit to buying your own gear," Pedersen said.

AWA windsports festivalThe AWA windsport festival got underway last Sunday. The day started off with the promise of 15-20 knots from the SW from metservice. The sun started to make its mark on the water in front of the Bayswater yacht club early morning as the grass area adjacent started to fill up with sailors. Kites were inflated and sails were unfurled.

As in the previous year the 2009 Auckland Freestyle Champs was run again on stand by to get the best conditions possible so the stand by period was set for the whole month of May with each Saturday and Sunday being a possible event day.

The weather systems during that time of the year are normally a bit windier and consistent - but what is normal in these days anyway? The first weekend in May had a terrific forecast, 30+ Knots for 4-5 days in a row but it became quickly apparent that the direction was SE, which is the most unreliable of all for the Auckland area. After a bit of gambling the decision was made to postpone the event to the following weekend. As it turned out the wind never arrived for the first weekend – luckily!
