Investment in Outdoor Recreation - the next step for Windsurfing NZ

What outcomes are being sought?
SPARC is seeking applications that will ultimately lead to increased long-term participation by young people, through:
1. improving organisational capability that leads to more effective service delivery;
2. improving national leadership to better co-ordinate delivery of outdoor recreation;
3. developing skills and knowledge to participate in outdoor recreation, by deliverers of opportunities.
SPARC is not seeking proposals to create more participation opportunities, unless they address at least one of the three outcomes referred to above. Read on ...

Expression of Interest : Funding proposal (SPARC) to promote youth windsurfing has passed the first hurdle

Windsurfing NZ has put in an Expression of Interest (EOI) for funding over the next 3 years to employ someone to promote windsurfing at the youth / yacht club level. This would be backed up with other initiatives to support the development of clubs and promote windsurfing in general. The 2 page submission has been accepted by SPARC but there's a lot of competition so we will now start working on the next phase of the proposal. If you would like to be involved in any way please contact Bruce Spedding. The 2 page submission is included below.

USA plan to reboot youth windsurfing backs up Windsurfing NZ approach

This recent interview with Nevin Sayre demonstrates how lucky NZ has been so far to be as successful as we have been on the International scene, particularly at the Olympics. The interview confirms not only the recent resurgence in windsurfing but also outlines the strategies for getting more kids into windsurfing and more success in competition. Its a powerful affirmation of the approach WNZ is taking to do the same here. Click more to see the full interview.

Wind week + Techno launch

Thu 3 Dec 2009 - Sun 13 Dec 2009
Tauranga

A series of windsurfing-related events is scheduled for the week-and-a-bit from Thursday 3 December to Sunday 13 December, to announce the arrival of competitive youth windsurfing in Tauranga.

The events, collectively dubbed ‘Wind Week’ follow the purchase of six new Bic Techno racing boards by the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy, a charitable trust which has been active in developing dinghy sailing in Tauranga since 2004. The boards, generously funded by TECT, are intended to form the core of a regular youth racing fleet alongside the sailing dinghies at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club. To this end, the Sailing Academy has been promoting a ‘Learn to Windsurf’ course at Kulim Park and 11 budding sailors aged 13 to 16 are about to graduate. Another after school course will be run in term one of next year.

Youngsters discover pulling power of windsurfing

Windsurfing may be an unusual school holiday activity, but Mad Loop windsurfing school owner Alan McIntosh is right into it. Even his dog does it. His programme has been running for 15 years at Lake Pupuke, North Shore, and runs during school term time as well.
