This section is written to help you with preparing a Risk Management Plan for your event. A Risk Management Plan may be necessary if your event is a large event or if a large number of spectators or public will be engaged with the event, or if there are larger than normal risks associated with your event. (eg a race between Takapuna and Great Barrrier Island)

Safety notice to competitors

Safety Notice for Participants

A notice must be included in the Race Instructions for your event. All participants need to be provided with this information. It can be incorporated in your Race Instructions or it can be attached as a separate page. Here is the text for you to use. If you want your safety notice to read differently, you need to let WNZ know.

BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER

Check your rigging for worn ropes, loose fittings or a cracked universal joint.

AT THE BEACH

Beginners should stick to enclosed waters.

1. INTRODUCTION

Event risk management

Event organisers need to consider the risks that may arise during an event. Organisers may become liable for property damage. Whilst ACC provides cover for personal injury, in situations where gross negligence has occured, the organisers may become criminally liable.

The WNZ insurance policy, effective from 17 September 2013 to 17 September 2014, provides the following cover for Windsurfing New Zealand Inc, constituted committees, affiliated clubs and authorised instructors and coaches (acting within their delegated authorities on behalf of the insured entities)

The policies Limit of Indemnity
• Public Liability $250,000 aoc
• Statutory Liability $500,000 agg

Notice of Race and Race instructions and entry form

Windsurfing New Zealand has an insurance policy that provides cover for liability arising from accidents at events. But for this insurance policy to apply to the event that you are organising, your event must be officially sanctioned by Windsurfing New Zealand. It also requires for you as organiser, to ensure that thorough risk management is implemented at your event.

We have a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as resources available for you to use in running a fun and safe windsurfing event. We also have organised insurance cover for events and we can work with you to ensure that your event can benefit from this cover.

Windsurfing has a history of being a relatively safe sport, but incidents can happen. Broken gear and injuries are common.
